Under normal circumstances, there is a delicate balance of beneficial and pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). This is influenced by symbiotic and competitive interactions and relationships. The microbial communities will not only protect the GIT but also enhance productivity in the host. The use of probiotics and prebiotics are two approaches that have been examined and can potentially reduce enteric diseases in poultry and also enhance their productivity. These substances have been proposed to assist in the prevention of carcass contamination and improve the immune response in the chicken. Probiotics have been defined as 'a live microbial feed supplement which beneficially affects the host animal by improving its intestinal balance' (Fuller, 1989). The probiotic mode of action is by 'competitive exclusion', meaning there is competition for attachment sites in the GIT.
A 42-day study was carried out to evaluate the growth performance, immune organ weight, digestive organ weight, ceca short chain fatty acids (SCFA) profile, and ileum histomorphology responses of broiler chickens fed a blended essential oil, prebiotic, and acidifier product (Biolex™). A total of 540 broiler chicks (Cobb 500) were allocated into three treatments, each with 12 replicates and 15 birds/replicate pen in a randomized complete block design. The three corn-soybean meal dietary...
INTRODUCTION Pioneer colonization of intestinal microbiota has a major effect on driving the maturation and composition course of microbial communities over time (Juricova et al., 2013; Rodrigues et al., 2019; Wilson et al., 2019). Later, the cross-talk between microbiota composition and immune cells has been highly associated with the establishment of immune competence (Crhanova et al., 2011; Chung et al., 2012; Schokker et al., 2017; Duan, 2018). Germ-free mouse models have...
1. Introduction Chicken eggs are considered as an important and inexpensive source of high-quality protein. In particular, eggs contain various fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that the human body requires to be healthy [1]. However, eggs are considered a major source of dietary cholesterol, since one egg contains more than 200 mg cholesterol. Therefore, egg consumption may lead to a significant elevation in plasma cholesterol levels and may increase the risk of...
Biological interplay between microbes and animals is based on molecular interactions. So, we know that pathogens attach to specific carbohydrate structures. What if we knew more about those target structures? This would bring development of pathogen binding supplements to the next level. Dr. H. tells about recent research presented at the EAAP’s 71st annual meeting. The poster entitled “N-glycan profiling of chicken intestine as a tool for designing improved feed supplements” presented an...

The recent major drop in the cost of DNA sequencing, combined with advances in the annotation of 16S rRNA gene microbial databases and analysis tools, have all contributed to the “golden age of microbial ecology” (Oakley et al., 2014). Poultry researchers have leveraged and applied these advances to define approaches that may be taken to manipulate microbiota to improve a number of poultry production steps. One of the major issues in...
Worried about pathogen pressure, gut function damage and low immune status of your birds? Watch Phileo latest released 3D video, to find the solution you need!...
Considering the burgeoning demand for meat and meat products worldwide, particularly outgrowing demand for chicken, in tandem with rising concerns toward degrading health conditions of various farm animals, numerous companies have commenced working toward introducing innovative products. These are anticipated to be high in probiotic ingredients. Along with new product innovations, these market players are being engaged in vivid industry tactics like acquisition, collaborations, and...
A healthy gut is an important key to improve animals’ production, and a balanced intestinal microbial ecosystem is indispensable for animals and their gut. The United States FAO and World Health Organization (WHO) define probiotics as "active microorganisms that are...
Heat stress pathophysiology As birds are homeothermic animals, they are able to maintain a relatively constant body temperature by balancing the production and...
The occurrence of pasty vent is usually observed after 3 days of age when chicks are mainly depending on their feed rather than their yolk sac. Some chicken flocks present pasty vent more often than others, being their frequency variable and hard to track. How can it be prevented or treated? Could this characteristic damage the growth or feed conversion ratio at the market age? The pasty vents are produced because the cecal dropping has a sticky consistence and thereby not be released out...
INTRODUCTION Newly hatched birds have immature and undeveloped immune system (Bar-Shira et al., 2003). Maternalderived antibodies (MDA) play a critical role in early protection against pathogenic organisms (Kramer and Cho, 1970). Maternal antibodies are immunoglobulins that are transferred from vaccinated or naturally infected breeder hens to the progeny through the egg, which provide passive immunity to progeny and protect them against infectious...
In this study, the effect of sustainable probiotics on Campylobacter jejuni colonization and gut microbiome composition was evaluated using chicken as a model organism. Chickens were given Lactobacillus casei over-expressing myosin-cross-reactive antigen (LC+mcra). LC+mcra can generate bioactive compounds in larger quantity including conjugated linoleic acid. A total of 120 chickens were used in duplicate trials to investigate the effectiveness of LC+mcra in decreasing C. jejuni colonization...
Introduction Butyrate plays an important role in gastrointestinal health in broilers. Although very efficacious and possible to substitute for dietary antibiotics, pure butyrate has obvious limitations of smell and handling and is virtually absorbed in the upper digestive tract. Butyrate glycerides have no such limitations and their butyrate can be released by lipase in the small intestine, thus providing a novel delivery system to the chicken gut. In our previous...
