Probiotics and prebiotics in poultry nutrition

Under normal circumstances, there is a delicate balance of beneficial and pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). This is influenced by symbiotic and competitive interactions and relationships. The microbial communities will not only protect the GIT but also enhance productivity in the host. The use of probiotics and prebiotics are two approaches that have been examined and can potentially reduce enteric diseases in poultry and also enhance their productivity. These substances have been proposed to assist in the prevention of carcass contamination and improve the immune response in the chicken. Probiotics have been defined as 'a live microbial feed supplement which beneficially affects the host animal by improving its intestinal balance' (Fuller, 1989). The probiotic mode of action is by 'competitive exclusion', meaning there is competition for attachment sites in the GIT.

In this study, the effect of sustainable probiotics on Campylobacter jejuni colonization and gut microbiome composition was evaluated using chicken as a model organism. Chickens were given Lactobacillus casei over-expressing myosin-cross-reactive antigen (LC+mcra). LC+mcra can generate bioactive compounds in larger quantity including conjugated linoleic acid. A total of 120 chickens were used in duplicate trials to investigate the effectiveness of LC+mcra in decreasing C. jejuni colonization...

Introduction Butyrate plays an important role in gastrointestinal health in broilers. Although very efficacious and possible to substitute for dietary antibiotics, pure butyrate has obvious limitations of smell and handling and is virtually absorbed in the upper digestive tract. Butyrate glycerides have no such limitations and their butyrate can be released by lipase in the small intestine, thus providing a novel delivery system to the chicken gut. In our previous...

INTRODUCTION Since the 1970’s, broilers have substantially improved in growth rate, breast-meat yield and efficiency of feed conversion (Dawkins and Layton, 2012). Feed conversion ratio (FCR), calculated as the ratio of feed consumed to weight gained, is a widely used performance measure, representing how efficiently the feed is utilized and converted into body mass (Stanley et al., 2012). The extraction of energy...

Introduction To help customer’s understanding, we were gathering some recent commercial trials data from Korea. In Korea, we have recommended to use AQUABLEND AVIAN during day 1-3 in drinking water or anytime at veterinarian’s discretion. At present, we have many customers who are using AQUABLEND AVIAN in broilers, layers, ducks and breeders. At 35-36 days old, AQUABLEND AVIAN-treated birds have shown around...

Probiotics offer one alternative to antibiotic growth promoters as they have been shown to improve the development and maintenance of a stable gut microbiome in poultry, which leads to reduced enteric disease and improved growth performance. Therefore, the objective of this study was to delineate the effects of Bacillus subtilis DSM 32315 (BS DSM32315) on intestinal morphology, microbial composition and performance in broiler chickens. A total of 240 Arbor Acre (AA) male birds were...

A probiotic strain ( bacillus subtilis DSM 29784, BS29784) is capable of inducing beneficial effects on growth performance and could be therefore a reliable alternative to antibiotic growth promoters. The underlying mechanisms of probiotics, however, are often not fully understood. An in vivo investigation of microbiota profile aimed to observe a positive effect of BS29784 on butyrate producer bacterium such as Ruminococcus or Lachnoclostridium . An in vitro ...

Poultry production programmes require elimination or reduction of the use of in-feed antibiotics growth promoters (AGP). This has led to an increase in the occurrence of necrotic enteritis, making it an economically significant poultry disease requiring an alternative nutritional interventions. Probiotics offer one alternative to AGP because they can elicit specific actions that promotes the development and maintenance of a stable gut microbiome, leading to a reduction in enteric disease and...

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin that is receiving increasing attention worldwide because of the hazard it poses to animal and human health. This mycotoxin was isolated as metabolite of the fungus Aspergillus ochraceus from which the toxin acquired its name. However, ochratoxin production is not unique to Aspergillus ochraceus as additional several Aspergillus species and several Penicillium species produce ochratoxins. Ochratoxicosis causes a reduction in production performance, viz....

1. Introduction Antibiotics has many possible benefits such as; improvement of feed utilization, reduction of mortality, improvement of weight gain, body weight evenness and feed conversion rate (Bolu et al., 2011). Currently, the use of antibiotics has come under critical reviews since antibiotic resistant bacteria strains can be transferred from the animals to humans consuming the products (Bent & Jesen, 2001). Development of alternatives to Antibiotic Growth Promoters...
