Under normal circumstances, there is a delicate balance of beneficial and pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). This is influenced by symbiotic and competitive interactions and relationships. The microbial communities will not only protect the GIT but also enhance productivity in the host. The use of probiotics and prebiotics are two approaches that have been examined and can potentially reduce enteric diseases in poultry and also enhance their productivity. These substances have been proposed to assist in the prevention of carcass contamination and improve the immune response in the chicken. Probiotics have been defined as 'a live microbial feed supplement which beneficially affects the host animal by improving its intestinal balance' (Fuller, 1989). The probiotic mode of action is by 'competitive exclusion', meaning there is competition for attachment sites in the GIT.
1. Introduction A previous study reported nontyphoidal Salmonella spp., Clostridium perfringens, Campylobacter spp., and Escherichia coli as some of the most important foodborne bacterial pathogens in the U.S. [1]. Overall, health-related cost associated with the food borne illness from those pathogens was estimated to be around $51.0 and $77.7 billion based on a basic and enhanced model, respectively, as described earlier [1,2]. S. enterica serotype Enteritidis (SE) that...
INTRODUCTION The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated there are approximately 48 million cases of foodborne illness in the United States annually (Elaine et al., 2011a, 2011b). Salmonella and Campylobacter are the most frequently reported bacterial causes of poultry-related foodborne illness (Heyndrickx et al., 2002; Mead, 2002) because of their association with the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of chickens...
The poultry probiotic ingredients market is poised for robust growth on the back of burgeoning demand for safe and natural growth promotors for poultry. Over the years, the demand for poultry ingredients has increased significantly due to the growing inclination towards cost-effective and natural feed additives.
The product has gained significant prominence in the poultry arena as a feed additive on account of its ability to improve immunity against pathogens and maintain proper...
I. INTRODUCTION The withdrawal of antibiotics has caused an increased prevalence of necrotic enteritis (NE) in broiler chickens, making it the most common disease in the poultry-industry globally. Direct fed microbials (DFMs) have been shown to have great potential as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs). Bacillus amyloliquefaciens produces several extracellular enzymes including cellulase, hemicellulose, amylase, xylanase and proteases. Its application has been...
Both essential oil and organic acid have been demonstrated to improve growth performance and gut health of broilers. With their different mechanism of action, it is hypothesized that combining them could provide additional benefits. A floor pen study with 1728 day-old male broilers was conducted to evaluate an essential oil blend (EOB, NEXT ENHANCE® 150, 1:1 thymol carvacrol) and an organic acid blend (OAB, AVIMATRIX®,...
I. INTRODUCTION Salmonella serovars can invade the host by inducing their own uptake into intestinal epithelial cells. This uptake is induced by virulence proteins delivered into cytoplasm of infected cells by a specialized mechanism known as type III protein secretion system (TTSS) (Bertelsen et al., 2003). These proteins activate signaling pathways involved in cytoskeleton rearrangements and cellular uptake processes (Galán and Zhou, 2000). Besides facilitating...
I. INTRODUCTION Antibiotics as growth promoters (AGPs) have been extensively used at sub-therapeutic levels in poultry production to prevent diseases and promote growth performance. However, the persistent use of antibiotics can increase antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic residue accumulation in the animal products as well as potentially transferring resistant strains to humans through the food chain (Jazi et al., 2018a). Consequently, the poultry industry has been...
Thanks to our excellent speakers Prof. Dr. Richard Ducatelle from Ghent University and Dr. Juha Apajalahti from Research Centre Alimetrics the webinar organized on the 20th of April has proved a success. We’ve learnt a lot about the...
The use of Bacillus species as probiotic supplements is expanding rapidly and these products demonstrate immune stimulation, antimicrobial activities, enzyme production and competitive exclusion as the most prevalent modes of action (Grant et al., 2018; Hmani et. al., 2017; Reis et al., 2017).
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a multi-strain Bacillus-based directly fed microbial (DFM) and its three single strains on performance of broilers challenged with a...
Watch the video to learn more about the essential role of the small intestine in absorption of nutrients from our valued speakers Prof. Dr. Richard Ducatelle (Ghent University) and Dr. Juha Apajalahti (Research Centre Alimetrics Ltd.)! These functions crucial to the profitability of the poultry production are often disturbed by inflammation due to a variety of causes, including coccidiosis and even heat stress. ...
Modern animal feeding includes prophylactic approaches for supporting intestinal homeostasis and immunity, in order to avoid dysbiosis, diseases, and need for antimicrobial medication. According to the principles of the One Health concept, the well-being of humans, animals and the environment are all connected, and at these times of a pandemic, avoiding the excess usage of antibiotics in animal farming is more important than ever. Pro-, pre- and synbiotics Prebiotics and...
A 42-day study was carried out to evaluate the growth performance, immune organ weight, digestive organ weight, ceca short chain fatty acids (SCFA) profile, and ileum histomorphology responses of broiler chickens fed a blended essential oil, prebiotic, and acidifier product (Biolex™). A total of 540 broiler chicks (Cobb 500) were allocated into three treatments, each with 12 replicates and 15 birds/replicate pen in a randomized complete block design. The three corn-soybean meal dietary...
INTRODUCTION Pioneer colonization of intestinal microbiota has a major effect on driving the maturation and composition course of microbial communities over time (Juricova et al., 2013; Rodrigues et al., 2019; Wilson et al., 2019). Later, the cross-talk between microbiota composition and immune cells has been highly associated with the establishment of immune competence (Crhanova et al., 2011; Chung et al., 2012; Schokker et al., 2017; Duan, 2018). Germ-free mouse models have...
1. Introduction Chicken eggs are considered as an important and inexpensive source of high-quality protein. In particular, eggs contain various fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that the human body requires to be healthy [1]. However, eggs are considered a major source of dietary cholesterol, since one egg contains more than 200 mg cholesterol. Therefore, egg consumption may lead to a significant elevation in plasma cholesterol levels and may increase the risk of...
Biological interplay between microbes and animals is based on molecular interactions. So, we know that pathogens attach to specific carbohydrate structures. What if we knew more about those target structures? This would bring development of pathogen binding supplements to the next level. Dr. H. tells about recent research presented at the EAAP’s 71st annual meeting. The poster entitled “N-glycan profiling of chicken intestine as a tool for designing improved feed supplements” presented an...
I. INTRODUCTION
The recent major drop in the cost of DNA sequencing, combined with advances in the annotation of 16S rRNA gene microbial databases and analysis tools, have all contributed to the “golden age of microbial ecology” (Oakley et al., 2014). Poultry researchers have leveraged and applied these advances to define approaches that may be taken to manipulate microbiota to improve a number of poultry production steps. One of the major issues in...
