Probiotics and prebiotics in poultry nutrition

Under normal circumstances, there is a delicate balance of beneficial and pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). This is influenced by symbiotic and competitive interactions and relationships. The microbial communities will not only protect the GIT but also enhance productivity in the host. The use of probiotics and prebiotics are two approaches that have been examined and can potentially reduce enteric diseases in poultry and also enhance their productivity. These substances have been proposed to assist in the prevention of carcass contamination and improve the immune response in the chicken. Probiotics have been defined as 'a live microbial feed supplement which beneficially affects the host animal by improving its intestinal balance' (Fuller, 1989). The probiotic mode of action is by 'competitive exclusion', meaning there is competition for attachment sites in the GIT.

INTRODUCTION For many years, broiler intestinal health was supported by the widespread use of antimicrobial growth promoters (AGPs). These AGPs are antibiotic substances that were added to the feed at subtherapeutic levels, leading to improved animal performance. In the European Union, the use of AGPs was banned in 2006 while the Center for Veterinary Medicine of the US Food and Drug. ...

A number of cereals and other crops that are incorporated into the human and animal feed are susceptible to fungal attack and mycotoxin production, either in the field (before and after harvest) or during storage, transport, processing and feeding whenever conditions are favourable. The fungi involved produce highly toxic compounds as secondary metabolites referred to as mycotoxins, which can cause a variety of ill effects in humans and animals, from allergic responses to immunosuppression...

  1. Introduction The use of probiotics has become a field of science, medicine and business that is growing rapidly. In agricultural science, probiotic, prebiotics, feed enzymes and organic acids, have been seen as potential alternatives to in-feed antibiotics (IFA) (Choct, 2002).   The addition of either...

Poultry production systems are highly challenging. They are affected by environmental factors like temperature, ventilation, population density and other stressing agents (Rocha et al. , 2014). Additionally, pathogens and mycotoxins are constantly present, which may reduce or affect the immune response of broilers. Broilers have a large amount of lymphoid tissue and immune system cells in the intestinal mucosa, which is known as GALT (gut-associated lymphoid tissue) and forms...

Recently, many studies have been investigating the impact of antibiotics on the gut microbiota, and researchers have shown that, in addition to altering the composition of the microbiota, antibiotics also can affect the gene expression, protein activity and the overall metabolism of the intestinal microbiota. Microbial changes caused by antibiotics, increase the immediate risk of infection and can also affect basic immunological homeostasis in the...

INTRODUCTION Now a day, there are limitations on the use of antibiotic because of its resistance development after prolonged consumption. So there is constant search and development for the new other alternatives such as prebiotics, probiotics and phytobiotics 1-4 . The principal site for digestion, nutrient assimilation and energy harvest is small intestine. These absorbed nutrients are directly contributing to the body weight gain. While, in large intestine water is...

Introduction Increasing scientific awareness of the role of some intestinal bacteria in promoting health and improving production has enhanced the use of probiotic bacteria as active functional ingredients in animal and human nutrition. Delivery of probiotic strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB)to poultry may be mediated by addition to either the water or the feed. Added benefit may be obtained if the feed is allowed to ferment to produce a feed containing at least 150 mmol...

Natural killer (NK) cells, an important component of innate immunity, are a distinct lineage of lymphocytes defined by the expression of CD56 and NKp46 and by the absence of CD3, providing a first line of defense against pathogens and cancer in a non-major-histocompatibility-complex- (MHC-) restricted fashion without the need of prior sensitization. Derived from the bone marrow, NK cells have wide tissue distribution, with high frequencies of mature ones in lung, liver, blood and spleen....
