Poultry nutrition - Other additives

Alternative feed additives have promising importance in broiler production due to the ban on the use of certain antibiotics. The most used antibiotic alternatives in broiler production are phytogenics, organic acids, prebiotics, probiotics, enzymes, and their derivatives. Antibiotic alternatives have been reported to increase feed intake, stimulate digestion, improve feed efficiency, increase growth performance, and reduce the incidence of diseases by modulating the intestinal microbiota and immune system, inhibiting pathogens, and improving intestinal integrity. Simply, the gut microbiota is the target to raise the health benefits and growth-promoting effects of feed additives on broilers. Therefore, naturally available feed additives are promising antibiotic alternatives for broilers.
INTRODUCTION Practical applications of agricultural wastes in poultry nutrition play an important role in replacing expensive ingredients and/or additives in their diet particularly after COVID-19 outbreaks in which an expected shortage of feed resources for animal nutrition may have occurred (1–3). Poultry are a valuable source of animal protein of high quality, and nutrition of poultry plays an essential role in controlling the balance of pro-oxidants and antioxidants and...

1. INTRODUCTION Substantial efforts have been made to replace expensive cereals with cassava in poultry feeding. Cassava (Manihot esculenta crantz) contains a large quantity of starch, therefore it is certainly worthwhile to be used as an energy source for poultry feed [1]. However, cassava contain high level of insoluble fiber which are not well digested by poultry [2]. Over the past decade, dietary enzymes have been used as a tool to improve nutrient utilization in chicken...

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM Avian coccidial disease, endemic across worldwide broiler production, and can be exacerbated by the reuse of litter should oocysts shed from previous flocks build up and sporulate in the current flock. Coccidial species can infect the gastrointestinal tract from the duodenum to the ceca resulting in localized tissue damage and reduced performance and without treatment, potentially result in morbidity and mortality (Chapman, 2014). The morbidity and mortality...

INTRODUCTION Reducing the production cost of quality meat and eggs for the ever-growing world population is a prime target of the poultry industry. Conventional feed ingredients like corn and soybean meal are widely used in broiler feeding programs, which increase the competition among food and feed and lead to raise production costs (Donohue and Cunningham, 2009; Stefanello et al., 2016). Several strategies were attempted to minimize the cost per unit production, such as...

Enteric diseases can severely affect health and welfare in broilers but can be effectively treated by antibiotics. However, complying with current consumer trends requires the adoption of other strategies away from these chemicals. One of the alternatives is essential oils (EO’s); plant-derived compounds that are used in poultry nutrition due to their antimicrobial, antioxidant and immunemodulating effects (Brenes & Roura, 2010). Little is known about using EO’s during...

Max-profit and stochastic approaches use production, market and nutrient variability data to formulate diets by more economically sustainable means; giving increased flexibility, opportunity and capacity for the Australian poultry industry to cope and thrive under market challenges (Moss et al. 2020; Sterling et al., 2005). However, in order for producers to accurately formulate diets using max-profit and stochastic techniques, it is likely that some data is presently lacking and there may...

Introduction Every animal production system experiences stress because of the numerous stressors on the farms. Stress is a biologically adaptive response to re-establish homeostasis (1). Heat stress is a variant of environmental stress caused by an increase in environmental temperature (and humidity) beyond the thermotolerance of an animal. Poultry birds possess a narrow range of thermoregulatory thresholds and are sensitive to environmental temperatures, which can pose as a...

I. Introduction Salmonella spp. in poultry pose a serious risk for food safety. The complex nature of Salmonella infections in poultry requires a multifactorial solution. It is key to preventing Salmonella colonization throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Short chain fatty acids (SCFA) have been described as having beneficial effects in the upper part of the gut, whereas medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) target the lower GIT (Van Immerseel et al., 2009). Coated butyrate...

INTRODUCTION Consumer preferences are leading to changes throughout the poultry industry (Northcutt and Jones, 2004; Fanatico et al., 2005; Meneses et al., 2017). From 2016 to 2017 the amount of organic poultry production has increased by 76%, holding a 2016 market share of $750 million (Philips, 2017). This is compared to an increase of the total organic agricultural farming market share which rose only 23% (Philips, 2017). This is partially influenced by consumers believing the...

An experiment was conducted to assess the potential for guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) to spare dietary energy and influence muscle myopathies when included in broiler diets. A total of 1,056 male Ross 708 broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 48 floor pens with 22 chicks per pen. Broilers were fed one of four experimental diets and reared to 50 days of age. Dietary treatments consisted of a control (T1), T2 (T1 – 110 kcal/kg apparent MEn), T3 (T2 + 0.08% GAA), and T4 (T1 – 55...

1 | INTRODUCTION Due to the impact of climatic changes and other global events such as conflict, the Covid‐19 pandemic, recession, and supply chain issues, conventional feed ingredient prices are continually increasing. The effect of these constraints is felt largely in developing countries that are coming under huge pressure to source raw materials such as corn and soybean meal (Abro et al., 2020). The search for alternative feed ingredients to sustain the livestock...

I. Introduction Plant-derived isoquinoline alkaloids (IQ) have the potential to support gut integrity and growth performance under conditions of enhanced stress such as heat stress. The previous study revealed that the BW increased in the IQ group, and the level of FITC-d, to evaluate the gut barrier function, reduced in the IQ supplement group (Kitasato et al., 2021). However, a comprehensive study on the effect of IQ on growth performance and gut integrity under heat stress during...

The increasing prices of major feed ingredients have prompted animal nutritionists to use inexpensive raw materials in their diet formulations to lower feed cost. However, due to their relatively lower digestibility, diets formulated with these raw materials often lead to poor gut health status and animal performance. For instance, poor protein digestibility results in the formation of toxic metabolites that can impair gut health and subsequently confer negative effects on broiler...

1. Introduction In recent years, the poultry sector has been developing rapidly worldwide to meet the growing consumer demand for poultry meat and eggs. Chicken meat is low in saturated fat and rich in protein, vitamins and minerals [1]. Similarly, a hen’s egg is the most affordable source of animal protein and constitutes a complete and highly nutritious food with significant health benefits for consumers [2]. It is estimated that animal-based food demand will grow by...
