Poultry nutrition - Other additives

Alternative feed additives have promising importance in broiler production due to the ban on the use of certain antibiotics. The most used antibiotic alternatives in broiler production are phytogenics, organic acids, prebiotics, probiotics, enzymes, and their derivatives. Antibiotic alternatives have been reported to increase feed intake, stimulate digestion, improve feed efficiency, increase growth performance, and reduce the incidence of diseases by modulating the intestinal microbiota and immune system, inhibiting pathogens, and improving intestinal integrity. Simply, the gut microbiota is the target to raise the health benefits and growth-promoting effects of feed additives on broilers. Therefore, naturally available feed additives are promising antibiotic alternatives for broilers.

Challenges in poultry nutrition Today, commercial poultry nutrition no longer encompasses just the ‘pure’ delivery of the nutrients needed by the animals for their preservation, growth and health. It must also be flexible in adapting to changing statutory regulations and keeping up with increasing consumer demands – beginning with eliminating feed of animal origin by using carefully selected raw materials, reducing the use of drugs such as antibiotics, ensuring...

1. Introduction “Feed-food competition” was defined as “the tensions and trade-offs between two alternative uses for edible crops: direct consumption by humans versus feeding livestock” (1). However, feed-food competition includes the use of production resources, such as land, wild fish, and water, and labor, capital, and ecosystem services. The allocation of these resources between all their possible uses is often determined by which end use is most...

1. Introduction Chickens have a well-developed trichromatic vision system composed of diverse photoreceptors and cones [1], allowing them to perceive a broad range of the color spectrum [2]. Chickens can see in ultraviolet wavelengths and perceive colors that are not visible to most mammals [3], including humans [4]. The chickens’ sharp visual capabilities allow them to effectively survey their surroundings and localize feed [5,6]. In addition, broiler chickens have shown...

At a time when livestock production is facing one of the biggest challenges in its recent history – the need to produce more with less and more cleanly – the balance between sustainability and profitability has become an inescapable priority. Industry cannot afford to ignore environmental constraints, but neither can it compromise the technical and economic viability of farms. As a family-owned company with 30 years of experience in animal nutrition solutions, at Liptosa we...

Recent publications by Verhelle und Saremi (2024) and Westreicher-Kristen et al. (2025) reported broiler feeding experiments to evaluate the nutritional value of guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) in comparison to L-arginine (L-Arg). Basically, reported broiler performance responses are in agreement with expectations based on literature. However, the authors drew misleading conclusions on the efficacy of GAA. It is our objective to clarify this matter because both publications confirm high arginine...

Gut health challenge is one of the major factors affecting production and profitability in commercial laying hens. In addition, chronic heat stress results in lowered feed intake, egg production, egg quality, gut microbiome and also impairs acid-base balance in laying birds. Numerous data support that laying birds fed with organic acid improved egg production and quality (Sakdee et al., 2018; Zhang et al., 2022). Butyric acid, an important organic acid serves as a primary source of energy...

1. Introduction For decades, the livestock production sector has focused on improving animal production efficiency to stretch out the world population’s needs concerning farmed products [1]. This is particularly true for conventional broiler chickens’ production, where advancements in genetics, nutrition programs, management strategy, and medicine have resulted in more efficient birds, allowing a decrease of the slaughter age dramatically [2,3]. This is well illustrated...

INTRODUCTION As most farmers’ focus is on broiler farming for meat, cockerel production has not received the attention it deserves over the years. With increasing global human population, it is necessary to boast the production of animal and poultry that will meet the urgent market need for animal protein (Steinfeld, 2003). One approach to tackle this is to stimulate the cockerel industry, the neglected area of poultry production. Protein is a crucial component of chicken...
