Poultry diseases

When chickens are healthy they consume less feed and produce more quality eggs. They are less trouble to look after and less money is spent on medical costs. Poultry disease can spread rapidly among chickens because they are usually kept together in the chicken house. The chickens share the same feeders and drinkers, which can spread disease and infections rapidly from sick to healthy chickens. In intensive egg production systems, much focus is placed on the egg laying performance of the flock. Poultry diseases can negatively affect the health and performance of your flock. Important and common poultry diseases include necrotic enteritis, chronic respiratory diseases, gangrenous dermatitis, fowl cholera, and avian influenza.

Several broiler producing countries have banned the use of Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGPs) related to the risk of cross-resistance development in human pathogens. Removal of AGPs from animal diets involves tremendous pressure on poultry farmers. One of the main consequences is a substantial increase in the incidences of infectious diseases, with an associated rise in antibiotic use for therapy and economic costs. Therefore, alternatives to AGPs are urgently needed. The challenge is...

Dear experts! It has really been very upsetting layer rearing for us for this season due to vent picking. The deaths due to vent picking is higher than deaths due to any other problems or diseases. The birds started picking vent from around 5 weeks of age and has not stopped till now (73 weeks at present). We are well aware that vent picking has multifactorial causes and after seeking different advices from different veterinarians, following adjustments were made. 1) Stocking density...

Farmers are often lazy to protect feed from moisture. We have observed reduced FCR and weight gain in some farms and huge mortality with stunted growth, necropsy of such birds reveal liver lesions and swollen kidney, I hope our members will put their practical experiences relating to such conditions which are generally considered as fungal toxicity though no laboratory confirmation is always possible. Positive response is observed by replacing feed , providing copper sulphate @1g/5litre of...
