Poultry diseases

When chickens are healthy they consume less feed and produce more quality eggs. They are less trouble to look after and less money is spent on medical costs. Poultry disease can spread rapidly among chickens because they are usually kept together in the chicken house. The chickens share the same feeders and drinkers, which can spread disease and infections rapidly from sick to healthy chickens. In intensive egg production systems, much focus is placed on the egg laying performance of the flock. Poultry diseases can negatively affect the health and performance of your flock. Important and common poultry diseases include necrotic enteritis, chronic respiratory diseases, gangrenous dermatitis, fowl cholera, and avian influenza.
The UGA International Poultry Short Course provides a comprehensive overview of modern poultry production. It is intended for those individuals with limited knowledge of poultry, as well as those who might have considerable experience in one area of poultry production but would like to have a better...

Reviews made on the impact of intermittent lighting (IL) on broiler performance (Buyse et al., 1996; Rodrigues and Choct, 2017) attest to the consistency of such lighting programs in achieving better feed conversion rates. So far, no research has been conducted to assess the impact of IL on the susceptibility to and recovery from infectious diseases. We hypothesized that an IL program would increase broiler resilience to necrotic enteritis (NE). In order to test this hypothesis, a 2 x 2...

There is an increasing trend of raising backyard poultry in urban and suburban settings across Australia, with Australian Egg Corporation Ltd. reporting backyard chicken coops accounting for almost 12 per cent of the nation's total egg production and 393 million eggs produced in metropolitan and regional gardens. However, there is no national or state legislation/policy in place currently for backyard poultry keeping and the issue is managed by local governments at a council level who...

1. Introduction In conventional poultry farming, the risk of transmission of infectious diseases, increased by, e.g., high stocking density, low genetic variation, suboptimal ventilation, and immunosuppression, represents a serious challenge for birds’ health and welfare [1,2]. Against this background, biosecurity represents one of the most powerful instruments to mitigate the risk of introduction (external biosecurity) and subsequent spread (internal biosecurity) of...

1. Introduction Eggs and meat from poultry are indispensable protein sources in people's meals in Bangladesh [1]. However, the advancement in the poultry production is often interrupted by the overwhelming occurrence of infectious diseases in low resource settings of developing countries such as Bangladesh. Occurrence of these diseases, which incur a colossal loss due to less production of a quality product and also from the treatment cost, are attributable to noncompliance...

Introduction Gout is a metabolic disorder in which there is precipitation and accumulation of Uric acid crystals in Kidneys, Viscera, Peritoneum and Joints, resulting in mortality. In birds, Uric acid is the end product of protein and purine metabolism and is normally excreted through Kidneys. Uric acid is insoluble in water and since birds lack in enzyme Uricase, there is no further conversion of Uric acid in...

1. Introduction Salmonellosis is among the major causes of foodborne gastrointestinal infection in humans worldwide [1] and the second cause following campylobacteriosis in the European Union (EU) [2]. Particularly, non-typhoidal Salmonella spp. (NTS) are one of the bacterial pathogens with the highest disease burden among human foodborne enteric diseases [3]. Poultry products are considered as a major source of human infection in cases of foodborne salmonellosis caused by NTS [4]....

1. Introduction Antimicrobials have revolutionized modern medicine by enabling effective treatments for many life-threatening diseases and saving countless lives. However, the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among pathogens has become a global health issue affecting humans, animals, and environment [1]. Introduction Medication costs in the poultry industry (excluding vaccination costs) can account for up to 1% of the total production cost. This amount may not seem significant, however, when we talk about cash flow and investment from a business perspective, we can measure that it represents thousands of dollars, whose profitability often falls on the production unit manager and the person responsible for managing medications. In a layer hen business unit, for every 1 million layer...
