Poultry diseases

When chickens are healthy they consume less feed and produce more quality eggs. They are less trouble to look after and less money is spent on medical costs. Poultry disease can spread rapidly among chickens because they are usually kept together in the chicken house. The chickens share the same feeders and drinkers, which can spread disease and infections rapidly from sick to healthy chickens. In intensive egg production systems, much focus is placed on the egg laying performance of the flock. Poultry diseases can negatively affect the health and performance of your flock. Important and common poultry diseases include necrotic enteritis, chronic respiratory diseases, gangrenous dermatitis, fowl cholera, and avian influenza.

Respiratory diseases have been subjected to long extensive research due to their economic significance. Infection with these pathogens causes severe economic loss due to mortality, carcass condemnation, and reduction in egg production, hatchability, feed efficiency and weight gain. In order to address these problems, a variety of...

Livestock Industry Foundation for Africa (L.I.F.A.) recently concluded its knowledge-sharing activities in multiple West African countries. Focusing on poultry health and nutrition, the activities also emphasized how climate change can affect the livelihoods of poultry farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. The programme started in Nigeria between 2019-2021 in six agroecological regions funded by Zoetis’ African Livestock Productivity and Health Advancement (A.L.P.H.A.)...

Parasites can be detected on the external surfaces of the body by way of a thorough physical examination. Periodical examination of the flock can help to detect an early infestation and can help to prevent a larger flock outbreak. It is important to detect infestations early because of the restrictions on treatments available for food-producing birds. Moreover, many of the parasites have an environmental component so treating the environment is also necessary for...

ABSTRACT Sudden death syndrome (SDS) is a condition in which fast growing broiler chicks die suddenly with no apparent causes. It has developed in to a major problem for broiler industry in many parts of the world. Broiler chicken of all ages are affected starting as early as 2 days of age and continues up to marketable age. Peak mortality usually occurs between 3 rd and 4 th week of age with more...

Introduction Fowl cholera is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida. This species is named “multocida”, which may be interpreted as a bacterium that "kills" (cida) "many" (multo). In 1879, Pasteur was able to cultivate this bacterium; this was the first time that disease-causing bacteria were grown in culture media, outside the animal host. Pasteur inadvertently found that hens were protected from P. multocida challenge by inoculating an...

The definition of disease in the broad context is any deviation from the normal state of health. Diseases can be divided into two broad categories: Infectious and noninfectious. Infectious diseases include those caused mainly by bacteria, viruses, mycoplasmas, fungi, and parasites. Non-infectious diseases can be further divided into three categories: management-related diseases, toxicities, and nutritional diseases (nutritional deficiencies/imbalance). Toxicities and nutritional diseases are...

With the temperatures rising in most regions, concern for heat stress events in Poultry barns is also on the rise. Heat stress can have a negative impact on several aspects of a chicken’s well-being; one consequence that can significantly impact poultry production and profitability is feed efficiency. With chickens starting to feel the physical impact of heat stress as early as April and May in some regions, solutions are needed to assist their physiological defenses. Nutritional...

Introduction Gout is a metabolic disorder in which there is precipitation and accumulation of Uric acid crystals in Kidneys, Viscera, Peritoneum and Joints, resulting in mortality. In birds, Uric acid is the end product of protein and purine metabolism and is normally excreted through Kidneys. Uric acid is insoluble in water and since birds lack in enzyme Uricase, there is no further conversion of Uric acid in...

Dear poultry scientists, I would like to start with the new subject regarding possible vaccination failure in MD prophylaxis. From my actual experience nowadays in spite of frequent use of bivalent vaccines against MD (Rispens+HVT) or (SB1+HVT) the MDV strains with raised virulence are isolated from field cases of the disease. I know in some cases this may be due to the low hygiene conditions in farms. However I also consider in some cases farmers apply double vaccination with bivalent...

INTRODUCTION Major health problems of the poultry industry have certain effects on egg production. Especially, infectious diseases which may drop in egg production and egg quality by affecting the reproductive system directly and the health status of poultry indirectly (Clauer, 2009). Gallibacterium anatis (G. anatis) has been known to be a part of the normal microflora of the lower genital and upper respiratory tract (Bojesen et al., 2004; Jones et al., 2013; Lawal et...
