When chickens are healthy they consume less feed and produce more quality eggs. They are less trouble to look after and less money is spent on medical costs. Poultry disease can spread rapidly among chickens because they are usually kept together in the chicken house. The chickens share the same feeders and drinkers, which can spread disease and infections rapidly from sick to healthy chickens. In intensive egg production systems, much focus is placed on the egg laying performance of the flock. Poultry diseases can negatively affect the health and performance of your flock. Important and common poultry diseases include necrotic enteritis, chronic respiratory diseases, gangrenous dermatitis, fowl cholera, and avian influenza.

Poultry scientists offer an approach for more accurate predictions of immune system function in birds
New research suggests poultry breeders can boost immune system function in birds by updating their prediction models to include “non-additive” genetic effects. The new study, published in The...
Pathogen control is a crucial challenge faced especially in the young animal stage of production. Young animals are very prone to pathogen infection since their gut takes time to fully develop. In this TechTalk, Annafe Perino, Product Manager from Southeast Asia and Pacific, shares how organic acids work to support animals in managing gut pH, fighting pathogenic bacteria as well as controlling pathogen proliferation....

Introduction Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi. They are unavoidable contaminants in foods and feeds, exerting harmful effects upon animal and human health 39 . The most important mycotoxins in naturally contaminated foods and feeds are aflatoxins (AFs), ochratoxins, zearalenone, T-2 toxin, deoxynivalenol and fumonisins 7,32 . Aflatoxin contaminated feeds are a severe threat to both livestock productivity and human health and cause...

Recently, Enterococcus cecorum (EC) has been associated with septicemia and mortality in young broiler chickens. There is limited research investigating the pathogenicity of EC strains isolates obtained from affected birds in the field. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the impact of in-ovo administration into the amnion of different EC isolates at day 18 of embryogenesis (DOE18). In a preliminary study, EC field isolates (n=7; EC1-EC7) were selected based on phenotypic...
Marcela Arango (University of Arkansas) discusses her research on Enterococcus cecorum in broiler chickens, in this interview during IPPE 2023 in Atlanta, USA....
Elizabeth Santin (I See Inside Institute) explains how this method works as an efficient sanitary management tool to predict health results in broiler production....

Ascites (or water belly) is a condition of fast growing broiler chickens in which the excess amount of ascitic fluid accumulated in the abdominal cavity. It has become major concern to the poultry industry around the world. This condition is extremely common in high altitude & more particularly during winter / cooler season.
Ascites is associated with inadequate supply of oxygen, poor ventilation and respiratory disease ...

Respiratory diseases have been subjected to long extensive research due to their economic significance. Infection with these pathogens causes severe economic loss due to mortality, carcass condemnation, and reduction in egg production, hatchability, feed efficiency and weight gain. In order to address these problems, a variety of...
Livestock Industry Foundation for Africa (L.I.F.A.) recently concluded its knowledge-sharing activities in multiple West African countries. Focusing on poultry health and nutrition, the activities also emphasized how climate change can affect the livelihoods of poultry farmers in sub-Saharan Africa.
The programme started in Nigeria between 2019-2021 in six agroecological regions funded by Zoetis’ African Livestock Productivity and Health Advancement (A.L.P.H.A.)...
Parasites can be detected on the external surfaces of the body by way of a thorough physical examination. Periodical examination of the flock can help to detect an early infestation and can help to prevent a larger flock outbreak. It is important to detect infestations early because of the restrictions on treatments available for food-producing birds. Moreover, many of the parasites have an environmental component so treating the environment is also necessary for...
ABSTRACT Sudden death syndrome (SDS) is a condition in which fast growing broiler chicks die suddenly with no apparent causes. It has developed in to a major problem for broiler industry in many parts of the world. Broiler chicken of all ages are affected starting as early as 2 days of age and continues up to marketable age. Peak mortality usually occurs between 3 rd and 4 th week of age with more...
Does anybody have any experience or scientific data about IBV QX serotype involvement of layers and breeders during rearing period and production period on reproductive system? Can QX infection in 10 weeks of age make negative effects on reproductive system (e.g. lower peak) in the production period? ...
Introduction Fowl cholera is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida. This species is named “multocida”, which may be interpreted as a bacterium that "kills" (cida) "many" (multo). In 1879, Pasteur was able to cultivate this bacterium; this was the first time that disease-causing bacteria were grown in culture media, outside the animal host. Pasteur inadvertently found that hens were protected from P. multocida challenge by inoculating an...
