Minerals in poultry nutrition

Minerals in poultry nutrition are typically classified as macro- or micro-minerals, depending on the levels needed in the diet. The macro-minerals include calcium, phosphorus, chlorine, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. Requirements for the macro-minerals are typically expressed as a percentage of the diet, while the requirements for the micro-minerals are stated as parts per million. Although the quantities required for micro-minerals are lower than for macro-minerals, they play an essential role in the body's metabolism. The micro-minerals include copper, iodine, iron, manganese, selenium, and zinc.

Introduction Phosphorus is an important nutrient for laying hens, e.g. for bone development and egg formation, but also plays an important role in environmental contamination. However, research on the phosphorus requirement of laying hens is dated (Van der Klis and Blok, 1997). The modern laying hen with a high egg number and laying persistency probably has a different phosphorus requirement than birds from 20 to 30 years ago. Furthermore, age and level of physical activity,...

The mineral complement of the animal and, to a large extent, the human diet is the fraction that historically we have made little attempt to supply in the form in which it occurs in natural mammalian foods. For the most part the strategy of using inorganic minerals, ie. oxides, sulfates and carbonates, has successfully provided the nutrients needed for growth and production of domestic livestock. Limitations in bioavailability or metabolism of inorganic sources due to either chemical or...

Introduction Year after year laying hens are becoming more productive, largely due to great success in genetic improvements. However, this improvement in productivity has made the animals increasingly demanding in nutrition, health and management. From the nutritional point of view, one important requirement is undoubtedly that related to increased egg production and improvement in eggshell quality. The above means an increase in the contribution requirements and the balance of...

ABSTRACT This experiment was performed to determine the effects of dietary ascorbic acid (ASA) supplementation on blood components, leukocyte and tonic immobility of male turkeys under summer conditions. A total of 120 one-day-old male turkeys were fed with three different diets. The experimental diets were: control without ASA (ASA-0), 150mg of ASA/kg (ASA-150) and 300mg of ASA/kg (ASA-300) of diet. The turkeys received the experimental diets for 18 weeks. Diets in...
