Probiotics and prebiotics in poultry nutrition

Under normal circumstances, there is a delicate balance of beneficial and pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). This is influenced by symbiotic and competitive interactions and relationships. The microbial communities will not only protect the GIT but also enhance productivity in the host. The use of probiotics and prebiotics are two approaches that have been examined and can potentially reduce enteric diseases in poultry and also enhance their productivity. These substances have been proposed to assist in the prevention of carcass contamination and improve the immune response in the chicken. Probiotics have been defined as 'a live microbial feed supplement which beneficially affects the host animal by improving its intestinal balance' (Fuller, 1989). The probiotic mode of action is by 'competitive exclusion', meaning there is competition for attachment sites in the GIT.

1. Introduction The permeability of the intestinal tract controls the uptake of nutrients and the transport of unwanted extracellular substances such as bacteria and xenobiotics, in addition to the non-digested substances. Therefore, gut health plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of various intestinal disorders. The permeability of the intestine is controlled by gut microbiota, digestive secretions, physical barriers (mucin, intestinal epithelial cells lining and tight...

Probiotics. Enzymes. Fiber. Gut Health. While these are all buzz words in human health, they are also topics that are increasingly being studied in the animal industry to aid performance and health of livestock raised to produce protein for human consumption. Moreover, as the poultry industry moves away from subtherapeutic antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) usage, multiple technologies have been explored to protect the health of birds from pathogens, while still maintaining low feed cost and...

1 Introduction The rising number of recently reported human illnesses with bacterial infections resistant to multiple antibacterial agents has become a fundamental concern in recent years [1, 2]. This phenomenon has become a serious concern with regard to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria called “superbugs” [3, 4], especially when considering that humans only started using antibiotics in the past century with Sir Alexander Fleming’s discovery of...

Following on from the success of the Research Topic “Alternatives to Antimicrobial Growth Promoters and their impact in Gut Microbiota, Health and Disease”, we are pleased to launch Volume II. Over a century ago Eli Metchnikoff (1907) proposed the revolutionary idea of consuming viable bacteria to promote health by modulating the intestinal microbiota. The idea is more applicable now than ever since bacterial antimicrobial resistance has become a serious worldwide problem...

Necrotic Enteritis (NE) outbreaks cause an estimated US$6 billion financial loss per annum to the global poultry industry (Wade & Keyburn, 2015). With discontinuation of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) in Europe and implicit withdrawal of AGPs worldwide, a global research effort has been made to find alternative solutions to minimise diseases in animal production including NE. The current study investigated the benefits of a Bacillus subtilis derived probiotic (Bs29784) in NE...

In the past few years, the concept of “gut health” has established itself as a norm in the scientific literature and animal production. Although the term “gut health” is not specially well-defined, scientists are in agreement that it refers to the capacity of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) to carry out normal physiological processes and to maintain homeostasis, thereby enabling it to withstand both infectious and non-infectious stressors. It is believed that...

I. INTRODUCTION The importance of the microbiota and general gut health, in relation to animal health and thus performance, cannot be underestimated. This has led to the development of management tools to influence and support the gut microbiota, as well as gut health in general. Probiotics, defined by the FAO/WHO (2002) as “live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host”, are a good example thereof. Specifically...

The Problem Gut and oviduct microbiota are closely related, especially because of the common connection with the cloaca. In this condition, modulating the gut microbiota with multi-strain probiotic supplementation may change the oviduct tract microbiota. The 2nd treatment received the...

CLINICAL AND SUBCLINICAL DISEASE Necrotic enteritis (NE) due to Clostridium perfringens is a disease of chickens (broilers, broiler breeders, commercial layers) and turkeys (Opengart and Songer, 2013). NE most often is diagnosed when it results in mortality and the presence of the gross lesion of a roughened-appearing mucosal surface of the small intestine at necropsy. However, the greatest economic loss to poultry producers may be due to the subclinical form of NE, which causes...
