Poultry nutrition - Other additives

Alternative feed additives have promising importance in broiler production due to the ban on the use of certain antibiotics. The most used antibiotic alternatives in broiler production are phytogenics, organic acids, prebiotics, probiotics, enzymes, and their derivatives. Antibiotic alternatives have been reported to increase feed intake, stimulate digestion, improve feed efficiency, increase growth performance, and reduce the incidence of diseases by modulating the intestinal microbiota and immune system, inhibiting pathogens, and improving intestinal integrity. Simply, the gut microbiota is the target to raise the health benefits and growth-promoting effects of feed additives on broilers. Therefore, naturally available feed additives are promising antibiotic alternatives for broilers.

Introduction With increasing age not only the absolute thickness of the eggshell declines, also a long-lasting stress exposure during weeks of high laying rates will affect formation of matrix proteins resulting in an increased egg shell breaking rate as well as in decreased performance. Both points are of economic relevance and appears to be a limiting factor in the prolonged and, thus, sustainable use of laying hens. Hypothesis The wood-derived feed...

Introduction Feed ingredients and manufacturing are expensive components of integrated poultry production, sometimes reaching 70% of total operational costs. Fortunately, the added costs of manufacturing poultry feed improve feed efficiency and poultry performance. The performance benefits from feeding pelleted diets results in a positive return on investment, making it a common practice in broiler and turkey production. Improving the quality of pellets further enhances poultry...

Introduction Eucalyptus is a medicinal plant that belongs to Myrtaceae family, originated in Australia but found worldwide, especially in tropical and subtropical regions (Salari et al., 2006). In humans, eucalyptus leaf is used to reduce nasal congestion in common cold during cold winter months (Sadlon and Lamson, 2010). Eucalyptol (1,8-cineole) is a terpene oxide and major constituent (more than 70%) of eucalyptus essential oil (EEO), which is used as a flavoring agent in food...

Background Biofortifications of chicken with bioactive nutrients such as DHA and calcidiol [25(OH)D3] have been viewed as an effective strategy to produce health-promoting meat for human consumption [1, 2]. Relatively low to moderate inclusion levels of calcidiol (1600 to 2800 IU/kg diet) [3, 4] and DHA-rich microalgal biomass or oil (0.55 to 2.55  g DHA/kg diet) [5–7] in broiler diets caused no negative effects on growth performance, lipid profile of tissues, or...

Introduction Monogastric feeds are reliant on plant-based protein sources, like corn and soybean. However, increasing demands on these plant-based materials for non-food industries, such as biofuels, is also associated with an increase in the price of these feed ingredients, placing an impetus on the demand for these alternative protein sources (Leiber et al., 2017). Emerging areas of monogastric animal nutrition research include the use of insect meal, microalgae, single cell...
