Poultry nutrition - Other additives

Alternative feed additives have promising importance in broiler production due to the ban on the use of certain antibiotics. The most used antibiotic alternatives in broiler production are phytogenics, organic acids, prebiotics, probiotics, enzymes, and their derivatives. Antibiotic alternatives have been reported to increase feed intake, stimulate digestion, improve feed efficiency, increase growth performance, and reduce the incidence of diseases by modulating the intestinal microbiota and immune system, inhibiting pathogens, and improving intestinal integrity. Simply, the gut microbiota is the target to raise the health benefits and growth-promoting effects of feed additives on broilers. Therefore, naturally available feed additives are promising antibiotic alternatives for broilers.
1 Introduction Copper (Cu) is a crucial trace element in animals; however, it cannot be stored in the body, thus, a regular dietary supplement is required. In addition, feed ingredients are commonly deficient in Cu; hence, the commercial diet should provide the essential amount of Cu in a biologically dynamic form, which depends on the physical and chemical properties of the form of the supplement in which the Cu is given in the diet [1]. Cu sulphate (CuSO 4 ) is...

Introduction Protein besides biologically active compound in the body exists as enzymes & hormones, also plays important role in physiology of living organisms. Soybean meal (SBM) is complete conventional protein source with well-balanced amino acids profile. On the other hand due to increase in prices of SBM, alternative sources like groundnut cake, sunflower meal, guar meal, rapeseed cake, cotton seed cake, copra meal, maize gluten, DDGS etc. are used, but they have...

Introduction Phytate: The latter part of the past century witnessed drastic increases in the size of poultry facilities for better efficiencies and lower production cost. Concurrently, fast-growing, or high producing breeds of poultry were developed and raised to utilize a plant-based feeds in their ration. But one of the major drawbacks of this ration is that it contains high phytate concentration making phosphorus unavailable to poultry, thus increasing the...

Introduction With increasing age not only the absolute thickness of the eggshell declines, also a long-lasting stress exposure during weeks of high laying rates will affect formation of matrix proteins resulting in an increased egg shell breaking rate as well as in decreased performance. Both points are of economic relevance and appears to be a limiting factor in the prolonged and, thus, sustainable use of laying hens. Hypothesis The wood-derived feed...

Introduction Feed ingredients and manufacturing are expensive components of integrated poultry production, sometimes reaching 70% of total operational costs. Fortunately, the added costs of manufacturing poultry feed improve feed efficiency and poultry performance. The performance benefits from feeding pelleted diets results in a positive return on investment, making it a common practice in broiler and turkey production. Improving the quality of pellets further enhances poultry...

Introduction Eucalyptus is a medicinal plant that belongs to Myrtaceae family, originated in Australia but found worldwide, especially in tropical and subtropical regions (Salari et al., 2006). In humans, eucalyptus leaf is used to reduce nasal congestion in common cold during cold winter months (Sadlon and Lamson, 2010). Eucalyptol (1,8-cineole) is a terpene oxide and major constituent (more than 70%) of eucalyptus essential oil (EEO), which is used as a flavoring agent in food...
