Poultry nutrition - Other additives

Alternative feed additives have promising importance in broiler production due to the ban on the use of certain antibiotics. The most used antibiotic alternatives in broiler production are phytogenics, organic acids, prebiotics, probiotics, enzymes, and their derivatives. Antibiotic alternatives have been reported to increase feed intake, stimulate digestion, improve feed efficiency, increase growth performance, and reduce the incidence of diseases by modulating the intestinal microbiota and immune system, inhibiting pathogens, and improving intestinal integrity. Simply, the gut microbiota is the target to raise the health benefits and growth-promoting effects of feed additives on broilers. Therefore, naturally available feed additives are promising antibiotic alternatives for broilers.

Introduction Poultry productivity depends on the combined effects of several factors such as the level of nutrients in feed, proper management practices, and the health status of the birds. To keep the enteric infections under control and promote growth, the supplementation of antibiotics in the poultry feed has been a regular practice. However, the use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) is restricted or banned in several countries due to the public health concern of...

Introduction Lipids are the primary source of energy for animals, and the digestibility of fats determines the amount of energy that can be obtained by an animal from dietary fat. The age of birds influences the digestibility of fats and poor absorption is a problem in very young birds. The absorption of dietary fat is physiologically restricted in young animals due to low levels of natural lipase production and low rates of bile salt generation (Tancheroenrat et al., 2014)...

Poultry diets are usually required to supply high nutrient and energy concentrations in order to meet the nutrient requirements of modern intensively reared birds. Commercial poultry feeds are frequently added with fats and oils to fulfill the energy requirements of poultry and to give high energy to support the growth performance (Blanch et al. 1996). Dietary fats and oils offer 2.25 times more energy than carbohydrate and they are also supplier of essential fatty acids and fat soluble...

I. INTRODUCTION The inclusion of 175 g/kg fishmeal, essentially at the expense of soybean meal, in sorghum-based broiler diets was shown to improve weight gain by 12.1% (1260 versus 1124; P < 0.001) and feed conversion ratio by 8.13% (1.299 versus 1.414; P < 0.001) from 15 to 28 days post-hatch (Sydenham et al., 2017). The dietary treatments had an average crude protein (CP) content of 222 g/kg in this study. Slowly digestible starch has been shown to advantage...

The caecal microbiota composition of commercial broilers is essential to the poultry industry as it can affect the broiler’s health and performance (Pandit et al., 2018). Bioactive components of the Black Soldier Fly larvae (BSFL) include antimicrobial peptides, chitin, and lauric acid. They are known to modulate the immune system of broiler chickens (De Souza-Vilela et al., 2020). This study aimed to investigate the impact of BSFL on the diversity, structure, and composition of the...

Introduction Poultry production is an important rapid growing money making industry. The advantage of poultry over other livestock is primarily due to the short and relatively quick turn over on investments and high quality protein products (Adeyemo et al., 2010). As a result of growing human population, there is high demand for poultry products (FAO, 2002). The rapid growth of broilers demands that they be supplied with high quality diets, which will satisfy both their...

Introduction Since the major part of costs in poultry production is related to feed, minimizing this part of the costs which depends on feed ingredients is very important. On the other hand, phosphorous is usually one of the expensive nutrients in poultry feed. Therefore, the amount of nutrients in feed ingredients, especially available phosphorus, has a very important role in lowering the cost of feed. The main form of storage of phosphorus (P) in plant feedstuffs is phytate...
