Explore all the information onPhytogenics in poultry nutrition
Phytogenics, also known as phytobiotics, are natural bioactive compounds of botanical origin that are used as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) and are added to feed to enhance animal performance. Although phytogenics encompass a wide variety of substances of biological origin, formulation, chemical characterization, and purity, they can be classified into four groups: (1) herbs (products obtained from flowering, woody, and nonperennial plants); (2) botanicals (whole or processed parts of a plant, such as roots, leaves, tree bark, and spices); (3) essential oils (hydro-distilled extracts of volatile plant compounds); and (4) oleoresins (anhydrous solvent-based extracts). These plant-derived products do not contain residues, are natural, and are less toxic than synthetic antibiotics or inorganic chemicals. Many are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and can be used as feed additives in animal nutrition.
“There is a global loss of about 2.4 billion US dollars in poultry industry alone due to coccidian infections”. Each year, over 50 billion chickens are raised as a source of meat, accounting for over one-third of...
Antibiotics have been added to livestock in Industrial farms since 1946 to caused animal to grow faster and put on weight more efficiently. Between 1985 and 2001, the use of antibiotics in feed for industrial livestock production rose a startling...
Introduction Excessive use of antibiotics over the last few decades has led to the current legislation whereby antibiotic use in animal production should be rationalized. As a first step, Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGPs) were banned from use within the EU (Bengtsson and Wierup, 2006). Use of non-antibiotic growth promoters has been rising as a result of the pressure to maintain a cost effective and economical animal production. Due to consumer demand, such pressure escalated...
Consumers are always thinking about the residual effect of antibiotics in poultry products. It is proved that antibiotics are not always good for poultry health even human health. Drugs can have residual effects. Due to this reason now antibiotics are not allowed (banned from animal feed) for treatment the sick birds in some of countries, like-Belgium. Now a day every poultry scientist is thinking, how poultry can run without using antibiotics and other drugs. So,...
Introduction The tomato is one of the basic human health fruits where tomatoes contain vitamin A, and vitamin C, potassium, folate and beta-carotene and carotenoids, which the most important of lycopene and beta-carotene and lutein and proved that the lycopene found in tomatoes of the most powerful antioxidants which protect against chronic diseases (Agarwal and Rao, 2000) confirmed Many studies that whenever tomato products consumption average, the lower the proportion of...
There has been significant improvement in the growth performance in broiler poultry industry has been achieved in India over the last twenty years. But in the stressful environmental conditions of high altitude cold desert Himalayas which are depicted with supreme temperature differences (from +35 °C to −35 °C), hypobaric hypoxia, excessive Ultraviolet radiations, very less availability of water vapours in the atmosphere and shortage of animal food, the growth rate of poultry...
Introduction At hatching, the digestive system of chicks is anatomically immature, and feed intake is a critical stimulus for the development of digestive tract (Dibner,1997). It is recommended to stimulate chicken growth during the first week that lead to immune system and cellular capacity of pectoral muscle developments (Bigot et al, 2001). The objective of this trial was to evaluate...

INTRODUCTION Medicinal plants having various phytochemicals and bioactive components such as trace metal ions, vitamins, alkaloids, carotenoids, polyphenols, fats, carbohydrates, and proteins are involved in enhancing long-term health benefits. Sravanthi and Rao (2014) . Moringa oleifera, commonly known as (family: Moringaceae) horse radish tree or drumstick tree, is both nutritional and medicinal with some useful minerals, vitamins, amino acids. Almost all...
Introduction There has recently been an increase in competition among ingredients used in the manufacture of livestock feed. There is consequently a great need for alternatives that can supply in the high demands for such ingredients, in particular for soya meal (Chisoro, 2015). Garba et al (2010) suggested partial or complete replacement of expensive and conventional feed ingredients with cheaper non-conventional substitutes. One of the ways of reducing the cost of...

Introduction Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana, Bertoni) is a perennial shrub that is indigenous to Paraguay and Brazil. The leaf, and its extracts have been used as a natural sweetener. Often referred to as the sweet herb of Paraguay (Geuns, 2004), stevia is today grown commercially for sweeteners extraction. The sweetening property is associated with their contents of several glycosides, stevioside, steviobioside, rebaudiosides A to F, dulcoside A and steviol (Gardana et...
INTRODUCTION Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is a well-known umbelliferous annual plant of the parsley family. The seed of coriander in the form of whole, ground or extract, are used primarily as a flavoring agent in the food industry or as spice in the kitchen [1]. Recent research demonstrated that herbal extract from some plant can prevent pathogenic microbial growth in poultry intestine [2]. In this study, we hypothesized that coriander extract would have...

Introduction Plant materials including flowers, roots, bark, leaves, seeds, peel, fruits, and wood can be used to extract aromatic and volatile liquids known as essential oils (EOs) (1–3). These EOs have a long history of use for medical purposes, in perfumes and cosmetics, and as herbs and spices for foods. EOs are considered to be secondary metabolites in plants; secondary metabolites are organic compounds that are not directly involved in the normal growth, development,...
