Bacterial diseases comprise approximately half of the non–outbreak-related mortality in broiler breeders and commercial layers. During the first week of a broiler's life, approximately 50% of the mortality may be caused due to bacterial infections. Outbreaks due to bacterial infections may increase the mortality dramatically and in some cases almost eradicate flocks. E. coli and Gram-positive cocci infections are responsible for mortality and production losses in poultry of all age groups and all production systems and may be regarded as multifactorial. Subsequently, efforts in understanding and controlling these infections are highly important. Although necrotic enteritis is primarily a disease affecting young chickens, this infection is of major significance in any production system. Besides increased mortality, the production losses observed in subclinical infections may be dramatic.
Evan Chaney (Cargill) speaks on colibacillosis, as well as the benefits of a postbiotic developed as a solution, in this interview during IPPE 2024 in Atlanta, USA....
Introduction Nepal’s poultry industry has seen a significant and rapid growth in the last decade, contributing more than 4% to the national gross domestic product (GDP) [1, 2]. Majority of the poultry products are supplied by numerous commercial farms (54% of total poultry production) scattered throughout the country. Backyard poultry also accounts for significant proportion of the total poultry production (46%); poultry meat and eggs are an easy source for protein and...
Histomonas meleagridis and Escherichia coli exhibit an outstanding interplay in vitro and are well recognized pathogens in poultry causing histomonosis and colibacillosis, respectively. H. meleagridis and E. coli reside in the intestine of birds, thus, to understand their interaction in vivo, gut microbial changes and caecal wall penetration of E. coli were investigated separately in experimentally infected chickens and turkeys (Abdelhamid et al., 2020, 2021). In the first trial, commercial...
Escherichia coli resides as a gut commensal in healthy chickens but also causes the extraintestinal disease called colibacillosis. Pathotype definition is primarily based on the clinical condition of the host, but it is still not definite due to the lack of genetic traits to differentiate between commensal and harmful isolates, which has led to divided views with regard to the pathogenicity of E. coli in poultry. In this study, embryos and chickens were experimentally infected with E. coli...
I. INTRODUCTION Growing concern over the use of antibiotics due to the rise in antimicrobial resistance and rising consumer demand for antibiotic-free products is increasingly becoming a challenge for poultry production. There is a need to identify natural and economical alternatives such as probiotics. The supplementation of probiotics as an antibiotic growth promoter (AGP) alternative in poultry production has the potential to improve poultry health, performance, growth, and feed...
INTRODUCTION Polymyxin B and E (colistin) are cationic antimicrobial peptides currently reserved as a last resort treatment for serious infections caused by multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria (Poirel et al., 2017). Although colistin has been used in human and veterinary medicine for over 50 years, it has recently become increasingly important in the treatment of infections with carbapenem-resistant organisms where few treatment options now remain. Enterobacteriaceae such as...
Martha Pulido-Landínez (Mississippi State University) comments on two Enterococcus studies presented at the IPSF, and offers practical recommendations regarding this issue, in this Engormix interview during IPPE 2024 in Atlanta, USA....
Mitsu Suyemoto (North Carolina State University) speaks on the mortality caused by Enterococcus Cecorum and her research on probiotics and other solutions to fight this disease, in this Engormix interview during IPPE 2024 in Atlanta, USA....
Evan Chaney (Cargill) Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) cause colibacillosis in poultry operations resulting in significant flock health and economic burden, creating the need for additional solutions to promote resiliency against infection. This study evaluated a postbiotic feed additive containing a saponin ingredient (SCFP+; Dia-V™ PT PLUS prototype, Diamond V, Cedar Rapids, IA), alone or in combination with...
Yosef Huberman (CONICET-INTA) talks about pathogenicity in E. coli strains and how the approach in analysis has changed to genotyping and sequencing, in this Engormix interview during IPPE 2024 in Atlanta, USA....
Jodi Delago (Arm & Hammer) Hatchability rates in the US broiler industry have been declining since 2014. The average weekly hatchability rate in the US in 2023 has been approximately 80.7%, a decrease of more than 4% since 2014. Published studies of nonviable embryos in Canada indicated that Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli are frequently recovered from nonviable embryos and that infection by one or both bacteria may be contributing to...
Jodi Delago (Arm & Hammer) discusses declining hatchability rates caused by Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli, in this interview during IPPE 2024 in Atlanta, USA....
Mueez Ahmad (Arm & Hammer) gives recommendations on how to prevent and deal with diseases associated with this bacteria, in this interview during IPPE 2024 in Atlanta, USA....
Héctor Leyva-Jiménez (United Animal Health) talks about a technology to process pathogen profiles to identify coinfections and help make better decisions on the farm, in this interview during IPPE 2024 in Atlanta, USA....
Poultry farmers are looking for feed additives to boost the immune system and improve gastrointestinal health in the post-antibiotic era. Bacillus species-based fermented products are an influential and effective alternative to optimize gut health. Bacillus species-based fermented products and their derived antimicrobial cyclolipopeptides Bacillus spp. are gram-positive bacteria with rod-shaped endospores that generate...
Joshua Jendza (Qualitech) talks about avoiding pathogen growth while providing iron to the bird, and how iron works against Salmonella and other bacteria, during this Engormix interview....
Cordyceps militaris is a well-known Chinese medicinal fungus that has been used as a nutraceutical food in several Asian countries. Cordycepin (3’-deoxyadenosine), a secondary metabolite produced from Cordyceps militaris has been demonstrated to exert a wide spectrum of pharmacological activities, such as anti-microbial and antitumor activities. However, the effect of cordycepin on immunomodulation in broilers is poorly investigated. In the current study, we...
