Amino acids, normally supplied by dietary protein, are required for maintenance, muscle growth, development of fetuses and supporting tissues in gestating sows, and milk production in lactating sows. Of the 22 amino acids, 12 are synthesized by the animal; the other 10 must be provided in the diet for normal growth.
The amino acids that make up proteins are conventionally classified as essential or non-essential. Essential or indispensable amino acids are not synthesized by the pig and must be supplied in the diet, whereas non-essential or dispensable amino acids are synthesized by the pig using nitrogen provided by proteins in the diet. Some amino acids are conditionally essential, amino acids with greater demand than synthesis under some conditions, i.e. depending on stage of growth, productive function, or dietary composition.
The 10 essential amino acids for pigs are: lysine, methionine, tryptophan, threonine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, arginine, histidine and phenylalanine. Dietary supply of protein must be sufficient to provide all the essential amino acids and the nitrogen required for synthesis of non-essential amino acids.
The amino acids of greatest practical importance in diet formulation (ie, those most likely to be at deficient levels) are lysine, tryptophan, threonine, and methionine. Corn, the basic grain in most swine diets, is markedly deficient in lysine and tryptophan. The other principal grains for pigs (grain sorghum, barley, and wheat) are low in lysine and threonine.
Veterinary APIs Price Index (VPi): March 4th 65.95 March 11th 66.35 March 18th 67.14 March 25th 67.57 Market trading sentiment has notably intensified, propelled by widespread price hikes across major categories, resulting in an increase in market inquiries and procurement. The veterinary APIs market is exhibiting robust performance overall, characterized by active inquiries and a favorable procurement environment. The market trend in the latter half of the...
The veterinary APIs market is currently stable, although there are varying trends across different categories. In early February, prior to the Spring Festival, market sentiment was weak, leading to lighter transaction volumes. Following the holiday, the price of mequindox has seen an upward trend, supported by stronger cost-side factors. Manufacturers of amoxicillin have maintained firm pricing, while the market displays a strong wait-and-see attitude. Categories such as doxycycline hyclate,...
Victor Naranjo, Technical Director at Evonik Animal Nutrition, explains from a technical perspective what guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) is and how it supports animal energy metabolism. He also discusses its reliability during feed processing and handling, and outlines the key nutritional factors that must be considered to maximize the benefits of GAA in animal production systems. ...
Introduction Increasing the efficiency of protein utilization is an important issue in livestock for production. Apart from the cost of protein (the input side), the issue is also driven to reduce nitrogen excretion (the output side) to limit the environmental impact of livestock production. The quantitatively most important role of dietary protein is to provide the amino acids for animal-derived products, such as meat, milk, and eggs. The similarities in the amino acids composition...
Megan Provost (AFIA) offers insights on supply and demand for vitamins and amino acids, as well as market trends in recent years, in this Engormix interview at IPPE 2026 in Atlanta. ...
Yuan-Tai Hung (IFEEDER) comments on the impact of limiting amino acids such as methionine and lysine in poultry and swine diets in the event of a supply chain disruption, during this Engormix interview at IPPE 2026 in Atlanta. ...
Q: Can you tell us how you arrived at the proposed optimal ratios and amounts of true digestible AAs in diets that you have developed in your research? A: Results of studies by my group have established the concept that animals have dietary requirements for not only...
1. Introduction Reducing the particle size of cereal grains increases the digestibility of starch and energy by pigs (Huang et al., 2015; Rojas and Stein, 2015; Lee et al., 2024) and it is likely that surface area of grain particles and interactions between particles and digestive enzymes are increased by reducing particle sizes. In contrast to the demonstrated improvement in the digestibility of starch and energy, effects of particle size reduction on digestibility of amino...
ARLINGTON, Va. – The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) is calling on U.S. policymakers, trade officials and the food and agriculture industry to work together on mitigating the potential threat of a U.S. vitamin and amino acid supply disruption. The call comes following the release today...

1. Introduction Consistent information on animal nutrient requirements and feedstuff characteristics is non-negotiable when proposing precise feeding programs [1]. This information allows nutritionists to determine a given amount of feedstuffs that will provide a diet that will allow production goals to be achieved at an optimized feed cost. Feed formulations can be established using published values of ingredient composition, such as the NRC [2] and Rostagno et al. [3]....
Dr. John Htoo, Global Senior Expert in Swine Nutrition at Evonik, shared strategic insights on how to support gut health and optimize the performance of weaned pigs through targeted nutritional interventions. His presentation focused on three key levers: nutrients,...
In low-protein diets, isoleucine often becomes a limiting amino acid due to excessive leucine or free valine. Appropriate isoleucine supplementation promotes protein synthesis, improves feed conversion efficiency, and enhances animal growth performance. Research demonstrates that 28-day-old...
