Ascites in Broilers

Some Strategies to Alleviate the Incidence of Ascites in Broilers are 1. Higher level of Vitamin C, Vitamin E & Se 2. Addition of Sodium bicarbonate 1% 3. Addition of 0.2% Aspirin 4. Feed Restriction

Dear
at what age this problem start
what types of housing you have and Breed .
Feeds daily intake , dont mix it with HPS .
no need for extra medication in the start and Types of Medication ,
what Signs and symptoms besides the As cites you have found ie any Kidneys involvement and what Types of beeding material used .
Ammonia and water quality please consider all these points and if need any other information to share or other signs share it with the respected group member ultimately there will be some solution at the end .
Thanks

The main cause is heart failure so efforts should be done on preventing cardiovascilar issues. Lighting programme, slowing down concerning weight gain during grower period, using compensatory growth potential...
Of course, quality of vitamines is crucial.

Actually the Ascities occurs generally during winter at the age of 25-30 days of age in this region.

Beside poor ventilation, high salt content in water is also another reason..in such senario, providing feed without salt or diluting the feed with grain ( broken rice, grinded maize) may be helpful..acidify the water, Give Se & Vit E... You can also use product like Deprosin A plus/ Ascito etc with mixed response...but complete arrest of mortality is unusual.

If it's during winter, poor ventilation is of highest importance!!!

We had enough discussion earlier to assess the cause to the ascities in birds during winter season. You could consult same where lack of oxygen in the house.more accumulation of ammonia in the litter ,poor ventilation.etc. had been talked and nothing new is left to add on, Hence consult all pieces of earlier tales.

The appearance of edema (ascites) in broilers can be caused by several factors:

1- The animal's environment (harmful gases, presence of ammonia and oxygen levels decline)
2-Poor ventilation of poultry houses
3-Feed deficiencies (Vit E, Selenium, K, Na, Cl ....)
4-Effect of altitude
5-High Temperatures in summer
5-Some diseases can cause ascities
So to determine the cause, it takes epidemiological investigation to find the determining factor in the emergence of the disease

Protein-energy ratiio, specially that characterized by protein deficiency maybe the first cause in developing the ascites.

Poor hatching conditions early hatch and proper water loose
During incubation and long hatch window may cause ascities

Poor ventilation ( when level of abailable Oxygen and removal of toxic gases is compromised ). Especially during chilling temperatures.

Fast growing broilers and parents must have favorable conditions of temperature and ventilation (oxygen). The needs of the oxygen with each hour of life and increase the mistakes that are made in the first two weeks of life are the reason for the formation of ascites, which became the reason of death in the 28-30 day of life. It occurs in all fast-growing selection because it is a basic requirement increase pectoral muscle led to a disturbed relationship between the capacity of the respiratory system and mass chicken.

In winter, normally the farmers cover the shed with side curtains up to the full height of the shed early in the afternoon to avoid chilling. Here farmers makes two mistakes- 1. The curtains they use is of plastic or polythene and 2. Covering the shed for more than 12 hours.

Polythene or plastic curtains are not suitable for broiler farms. It prevents the winds only, the chilling can not be prevented by using plastic. moreover lack of pores in the polythene blocks gaseous exchange in the farm.

As a result of dropping the curtains early in the afternoon there is accumulation of ammonia and carbon di-oxide in the farm which replaces the other components of air particularly the oxygen of our importance. Sometimes the Oxygen level goes below 18%.

Lack of Oxygen is harmful. Blood transport oxygen to the body tissues. Lack of Oxygen in the tissues results in sending message to brain for supplying more oxygen to fulfil the need. The brain in turn asks the heart to pump more oxygenated blood to the tissues. The more forceful and rapid pumping by heart leads to leakage of the watery portion of blood to areas where there is no resistance. Mesenteric blood vessels are least guarded by muscles and the fluid oozes out to abdomen which we call is ascites.

To prevent ascites, the farmers need to change their management. 1. They can use exhaust fan to remove the ammonia accumulated at night. 2. Use of side curtains made of jute is more helpful in keeping the shed warm. The pores in the jute curtains will help in gaseous exchange too. 3. The curtains can be fixed at the lower part of the netted area. As the environment cools slowly, the curtains can be lifted upward to cover the lower portion first and gradually move upward as it cools more. It gives more time to escape the harmful gases produced in the shed. Full cover of the shed should be allowed late at night. Follow the opposite direction in the morning and remove the curtains gradually.

Once the bird suffer from ascites, it becomes little difficult to control. There is every chance of mortality due to infection. So treatment should be aimed at removing the water as well as treating the infection. water removal will lead to weight loss.

The farmers should also note that using coal to warm the shed is harmful if there is no provision to release the smoke outside the shed. It produces CO, which will cause the amount of mortality to be on higher side.

Rest of the factors, like salt level, protein level, afection of kidney and liver also needs to be looked into.

The appearance of ascites is mainly caused by the reduced amount of oxygen at any stage in life. Hatching eggs, fast growing broad pectoral fattening poultry are heavier and larger than the eggs of poultry produced ten years ago, so most of the old machine is no longer able to provide enough oxygen in the final stages of incubation. In terms of when or in the first days of the chickens do not have good conditions for accommodation occurrence of ascites is inevitable and death become significantly large when the chicks reach a weight of more than a kilogram.

hii to avoid ascietis you must know in first the machanizm of ascietis to avoid its reasons
machanizm of ascietis is
as the rapid growth and high body weight gain and high density of poultry in farm and eating of fast food pellets in the last 10 years of poultry industry leads to increase the body demand for oxygen and increase in cardiac output and it leads to increase the pulmonary arterial pressure leads to right ventricular and dilation hypertrophy and valvular insufficiency (right ventricular failure) and in the end leading to heart congestion and oedmae and so ascietis occur and body of bird full w water
so to avoid ascietis we must give agood source of oxygen and good ventillation to farm and prevent ammonia odour
and give betaine by product to water and feed

thank you

Ascites in broiler flocks : the major causes are correlate to dysfunction of circulatory system ( heart) ,renal failure and liver disorders if we look for the previous organs and look to our farm management and nutrition we can determine the major causes of ascites which are 1st liver dysfunction due to aflatoxicosis or excess use of antibiotics 2nd hypoxia due to low level of oxygen in thefarm (location of farms in high altitude )or poor energy source and accumulation of carbon gases or ammonia in the farm 3rd heavy metal poullation of water supply that damage the kidney. So we should review management programme as well as nutrition and quality of water supply and reducing use of antibiotics.

Knowledgeable discussion by all participants, as per discussion following may be reasons of Ascites in poultry:
1-Poor Feed Quality , excess of mineral contents or poor quality energy sources.
2-Poor Water Quality, check pH and Hardness of water, turbidity of water.
3-Poor Management, Accumulation of gasses, improper feeding and watering space.
4-Seconday infection, may be due to E.coli or Aflatoxicossis or high use of antibiotics because of any-other disease.
5-Alttitude, fast growing birds need more oxygen.

The other causes high protein in feed .... less ventilation .... I B infection do damage of kidney ..... high top of reign which less oxygen this with your causes do ascities
