The second edition of the Adisseo Research Grant awarded three winners. The jury was impressed by the quality and relevance of all three winning projects, that can split a whopping 1 million Euro for the coming 3 years. The award ceremony took place last month at the World’s Poultry Congress in Paris, France.
Apart from a positive impact on sustainability, the proposed research projects for this year were judged on their contribution to nutritional evaluation of new raw materials and/or alternatives to medication: nutrition for resilience.
From the proposals that were sent in, the international Scientific Committee selected the following three winners.
• Using black soldier flies to turn low value Fusarium mycotoxin contaminated organic waste into high value edible feed products (the MycoSoldier project).
This is collaborative research project between Ghent University and Inagro (a research and advisory company in Belgium). The award was presented to Prof. Gunther Antonissen from Ghent University.
• Improving pig resilience and the sustainability of the production chain through mineral nutrition.
This is a collaborative project between the University of Laval, Canada, AAFC - Agriculture & Agri-Food, Canada, University of Wisconsin, USA, INRAe, France and Agroscope, Switzerland. The award was presented to Marie-Pierre Létourneau-Montminy from the University Laval.
• Assessing the variability in energy and nutrient availability of different sources of two important co-products used worldwide for pigs and poultry: corn-dried distillers' grains with solubles (DDGS) and animal by-product meal.
This is a collaborative project between the University Federal Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS, Brazil), University of Sao Paolo (UNESP, Brazil), Agriculture & Agri-Food, Canada, and the University of Laval, Canada. The award was presented to by Ines Andretta from the University Federal Rio Grande do Sul.
Pierre-André Geraert, Director Scientific Marketing at Adisseo explains: “Adisseo is committed to have a long-term implication in research and is fully involved to find sustainable and meaningful innovations in animal nutrition. And this is all about education, training and support. This is why we introduced the Adisseo Research Grant in 2021, to offer up to 1 million Euro each year to collaborative projects. The winners of 2022 will all contribute to challenges we defined for this year’s grant, and I am looking forward to seeing some of the interim results of these projects soon and follow them in the coming years”.
2021 winners in the spotlight again
The two winners of the first Adisseo Research Grant 2021-2024 were also called on stage and officially received the award. The last winners were put in the spotlight again as the WPC was postponed multiple times, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 2021 winning projects were:
• How to feed broilers during infection with, and recovery from, coccidia in different environments: functional role of amino acids, presented by Prof. Ilias Kyriazakis (AFBI, Northern Ireland, UK) and Prof. Oluyinka Olukosi (University of Georgia, USA).
• GutMIVir: Understanding the contribution of the gut microbiota to mucosal immunity and antiviral defences in the chicken, presented by Dr. Rodrigo Guabiraba (INRAe), Prof. Bernd Kaspers (LMU in Germany) and Prof. Lonneke Vervelde (UEDIN/Roslin, UK).
Independent Scientific Committee
For this 1 million Euro research grant, Adisseo relies on an independent Scientific Committee, which includes 5 members from academia: Prof. Markus Rodehutscord, University of Hohenheim (Germany), Prof. Mike Kidd, University of Arkansas (USA), Prof. Richard Ducatelle, Ghent University (Belgium), Prof. Nilva Sakomura, UNESP (Brazil), Prof. Yuming Guo, China Agricultural University (China) and 9 representatives from the feed industry: Dr. Mario Penz (Cargill), Dr. Roy Brister (Tyson), Dr. James Pei (LIHUA), Dr. Thierry Maucotel (LDC), Dr. Marcus Reginatto (BRF), Dr. Marné Meyer (NOVATEK), Dr. Nurul Basar (NOURISH), Dr. Pairat Srichana (CP) and Dr. Ferry Poernama (JAPFA).
