Poultry industry

The most important segment of the livestock industry is the poultry sector. An extremely complicated industry in itself, the poultry sector consists of many different levels of production, including feed factories, hatcheries, breeding farms, and processing plants. Likewise, there are sub-units such as chicken, duck, turkey, and goose in terms of species in the sector. Poultry production involves several stages before poultry products reach consumers, including the rearing of these birds from hatch to peak performance and the subsequent harvesting and processing of broilers and eggs. Therefore, converting broilers to meat products requires a number of processing steps prior to retail. As such, food safety is an important consideration at all phases of poultry meat and egg production. Among poultry species, chicken is the main breeding area around the world and, according to estimates, represents more than 90 percent of the poultry sector.

1. Introduction “Feed-food competition” was defined as “the tensions and trade-offs between two alternative uses for edible crops: direct consumption by humans versus feeding livestock” (1). However, feed-food competition includes the use of production resources, such as land, wild fish, and water, and labor, capital, and ecosystem services. The allocation of these resources between all their possible uses is often determined by which end use is most...

Poultry is a homothermal animal, and its body covers with feathers to increase its cold resistance. However, Taiwan is an island that lies in the tropic of cancer, and the general climate is marine tropical. During summer, this mechanism is adverse to heat dissipation and causes heat stress. Heat stress is a familiar stress effect that will affect animals’ growth performance, productivity, and health. Heat stress affects livestock production results in increased demand for net...

Introduction It is well known that humans need food in order to survive. When all people, at all times, lack physical and financial access to sufficient, secure, and nourishing food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life, food insecurity results [1]. According to [2], around 795 million people globally suffer from chronic undernourishment, and Africa is responsible for more than 60% of the world’s food insecurity. With a hunger...

1. Introduction In animal husbandry, antibiotics are principally used to prevent, control, and treat diseases. However, they have also been extensively used as growth promoters [1,2]; this practice has been banned in Europe and the U.S. [3,4] but is still widespread in other regions, especially in rural areas, where farmers tend to depend more on antibiotics. Various countries lack legislative measurements to control antibiotic use. Moreover, farmers are not appropriately...

Commercial egg laying operations can benefit from more effective and economical ways to depopulate flocks at the end-of-lay while improving worker performance and maintaining or improving animal welfare. Recent on-farm research in Switzerland applied portable blue light units and specialized crate carts, seeking to improve depopulation during catching, carrying, and crating without changes to flock housing or other infrastructure. However, neither the blue light nor the cart reduced layer...

As the global poultry industry has grown and developed, a great variety of consumer products has emerged, focused on convenience and practicality, that provide opportunities to regain value from carcass parts that may have otherwise gone to waste. During poultry processing, novel products such as fresh sausages can be an alternative use for compromised meats, such as those affected by deep pectoral myopathy (DPM), a recurrent problem in the pectoral (breast) muscles of birds...

Woody breast (WB) and white striping (WS) in broiler breast meat are emerging issues in the poultry industry worldwide. These conditions are associated with high breast yielding, heavy broilers, and they have negative quality impacts and major economic implications. Nutritional strategies have been studied by researchers in efforts to reduce the prevalence of WB in broilers, without negative impacts on live performance. Dietary inclusion of guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) has been evaluated as a...
