Poultry industry

The most important segment of the livestock industry is the poultry sector. An extremely complicated industry in itself, the poultry sector consists of many different levels of production, including feed factories, hatcheries, breeding farms, and processing plants. Likewise, there are sub-units such as chicken, duck, turkey, and goose in terms of species in the sector. Poultry production involves several stages before poultry products reach consumers, including the rearing of these birds from hatch to peak performance and the subsequent harvesting and processing of broilers and eggs. Therefore, converting broilers to meat products requires a number of processing steps prior to retail. As such, food safety is an important consideration at all phases of poultry meat and egg production. Among poultry species, chicken is the main breeding area around the world and, according to estimates, represents more than 90 percent of the poultry sector.
The rendering industry’s contributions to animal agriculture’s economic and environmental sustainability is vital, yet often overlooked when food and animal food production is discussed. The International Rendering Symposium, held in conjunction with the 2024 International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta, will discuss rendering's contributions, impact and the future of the industry. Hosted by the North American Renderers Association (NARA) and U.S. Poultry...

INTRODUCTION Global population growth, along with rising affluence in Asia, are driving up not only our total demand for food, but also the amount of protein required to feed all of humanity (1, 2). More specifically, the world’s population is expected to grow to over 9 billion people by 2050, and demand for poultry, which represents a relatively healthy and efficient source of protein, is likely to be double from what it was in 2005. At the same time, it is expected that...

INTRODUCTION Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobe that is the causative agent of listeriosis (Gudbjörnsdóttir et al., 2004). They are considered saprophytic organisms with the capability to adapt to an ever-changing environment because they possess multiple stress response mechanisms to overcome varying temperatures, salt concentrations and pH (Berrang et al., 2000; Milillo et al., 2012a; Giaouris et al., 2015; Saldivar et al., 2018). I.INTRODUCTION A high degree of volatility with regard to the pricing and supply of inputs has arisen. This situation began with the COVID-19 pandemic and the negative effect it had on the global supply chain, and has been exacerbated by the Russian-Ukrainian war. This state of affairs will likely persist until at least the end of 2023 (Mulder, 2022). It has given rise to the intermittent non-availability of several essential feed ingredients. Coupled with these short- to medium-term...

1. Introduction Despite improvements in broiler performance through genetics, nutrition, and management, there is still a gap between the potential and the performance achieved(1). Chicken meat production is typically based on company guidelines and producer experience. However, the development of new technologies in the last decade has supported objective decision making in poultry farms(2). In addition, epidemiological studies using an integrated approach to identify the...
