Poultry industry

The most important segment of the livestock industry is the poultry sector. An extremely complicated industry in itself, the poultry sector consists of many different levels of production, including feed factories, hatcheries, breeding farms, and processing plants. Likewise, there are sub-units such as chicken, duck, turkey, and goose in terms of species in the sector. Poultry production involves several stages before poultry products reach consumers, including the rearing of these birds from hatch to peak performance and the subsequent harvesting and processing of broilers and eggs. Therefore, converting broilers to meat products requires a number of processing steps prior to retail. As such, food safety is an important consideration at all phases of poultry meat and egg production. Among poultry species, chicken is the main breeding area around the world and, according to estimates, represents more than 90 percent of the poultry sector.
Demand for poultry meat and eggs decreased this week in Indonesia's South Sulawesi provincial capital, Makassar, after a recent bird flu outbreak which has killed 24,000 fowl. The price of chickens has decreased by between 1,500 rupiah to 2,000 rupiah and the number of chickens sold has almost halved this week in Sulawesi. Bird flu has re-emerged in Indonesia's main island of Java and South Sulawesi province since the start of the year, prompting the government to slaughter affected...

The pathogen Campylobacter, Dan Donoghue says, is “a very interesting organism.” His team recently found that it occurs naturally in turkeys’ male and female reproductive tracts. To make things more complicated, it appears that artificial insemination procedures at turkey farms could expand the pathogen’s prevalence. But another procedure used on the farm – placing antibiotics in turkey semen – could offer some hope for fighting Campylobacter there. Donoghue’s Food Safety Consortium research...

In a recent press conference, Swift Foods Inc. chairman Jose Concepcion made the disclosure to local media adding that while the country is generally bird-flu free it is better to maintain it that way rather than risk having it enter through the backdoor. The...

There are two poultry farming systems in Pakistan - the small scale or rural, and the large scale or commercial poultry farming. The latter did not exist till 1963. In 1977, the government decided to improve and develop the rural poultry farming on commercial lines. New breeds like Fayoumi, Dhoki and Red were introduced as these were capable of producing 200-220 eggs per year. Besides, training, free vaccination, feed management, and cooperative societies for establishing small poultry...

USDA's Food Safety & Inspection Service is making available results of baseline studies it conducted on generic E. coli and salmonella between 1997 and 2000 as a means to assist inspected establishments in assessing their progress on testing to meet performance criteria. FSIS stressed that publication of the baseline results does not affect the current generic E. coli criteria and salmonella standards listed in FSIS regulations. The regulations require that all inspected meat and poultry...

SteriFx has developed an antimicrobial solution that it claims is proven to be effective against Campylobacter jejuni, a major cause of food poisoning in meat and poultry products. Its GRAS (Generally Recognised As Safe) status allows for the direct use on food products as a secondary food additive. "The success of FreshFx in killing Campylobacter jejuni is important to the poultry and meat processing facilities," said John Dankert, vice president of research and development for SteriFx....

Chicken is the fastest growing meat sector in the world but millions of farmers livelihoods are at risk as Asia seeks to tackle bird flu, a UN expert said. Food is the most common source of zoonotic infections in humans, suggesting that tightening biosecurity measures at the beginning of the food supply chain is vital. As a result, the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) is targeting poultry producers to help achieve a 20 per cent reduction in the incidence of foodborne diseases by April 2006. This is contained in the FSA's strategic plan for 2005-2010, a five-year strategy that focuses on primary food production as a means of reducing...

The chicken and turkey industries state a recent report on listeria food poisoning is based on political agenda instead of true science.
