Poultry gut health

The efficient conversion of feed into its basic components for optimal nutrient absorption is vital for both broiler and broiler breeder production and welfare. Gut health, an intricate and complex area combining nutrition, microbiology, immunology and physiology, has a key role to play. When gut health is compromised, digestion and nutrient absorption are affected which, in turn, can have a detrimental effect on feed conversion leading to economic loss and a greater susceptibility to disease. In addition, recent changes in legislation on the use of antimicrobials, differing feed requirements and more efficient birds highlight the need for a better understanding of gut function and gut health.

I. INTRODUCTION One of the most sustainable types of production of animal protein is chicken meat production. Chicken production needs less feed consumption per kilogram of produced meat and uses less land and water for both farming and feed production. The major reason for this is the continuous improvement of animal performance, reflected in an ever decreasing feed conversion (kg feed consumed per kg body weight) and reduced time to achieve market...

Intensive farming is drastically increasing yearly in South East Asia to comply with the growing demand of animal protein of the region. Intensive farming has been possible worldwide thanks to the genetic improvements and technologic and productive investments done, which have allowed to reduce the breeding period while increasing the benefits. Animals are under a high pressure in this production system to achieve the desired productive parameters, which makes them more sensible to the...

Watch the video to learn more about the essential role of the small intestine in absorption of nutrients from our valued speakers Prof. Dr. Richard Ducatelle (Ghent University) and Dr. Juha Apajalahti (Research Centre Alimetrics Ltd.)! These functions crucial to the profitability of the poultry production are often disturbed by inflammation due to a variety of causes, including coccidiosis and even heat stress. ...

Modern animal feeding includes prophylactic approaches for supporting intestinal homeostasis and immunity, in order to avoid dysbiosis, diseases, and need for antimicrobial medication. According to the principles of the One Health concept, the well-being of humans, animals and the environment are all connected, and at these times of a pandemic, avoiding the excess usage of antibiotics in animal farming is more important than ever. Pro-, pre- and synbiotics Prebiotics and...

I. INTRODUCTION There is considerable interest in the development of low protein diets balanced with supplemental amino acids for broiler chickens due to economic, environmental and bird welfare advantages (Moss et al., 2018). However, under commercial feeding conditions, chickens are exposed to various challenges of infectious and non-infectious origin. For challenges of infectious origin, even without any clinical signs of disease, animals affected by chronic subclinical...

I. INTRODUCTION The use of feed additives such as those based on essential oils or organic acids is increasing in poultry production as a result of a number of factors including legislation on restricting antibiotic use and consumer preferences for more natural, welfare friendly poultry production. Formic and propionic acid products have a strong antimicrobial activity and have been shown to improve bird performance and positively influence the gut microbiota (Emami et...

INTRODUCTION Supplementing poultry feed with specific enzymes improves the nutritional value of feed ingredients by increasing the efficiency of digestion and nutrient uptake. These enzymes help to increase the availability of nutrients particularly starch, protein, amino acids and minerals such as phosphorus and calcium from feed ingredients. Variability in the nutrient content of maize has been demonstrated to be as great as that observed for wheat and barley...

A 42-day study was carried out to evaluate the growth performance, immune organ weight, digestive organ weight, ceca short chain fatty acids (SCFA) profile, and ileum histomorphology responses of broiler chickens fed a blended essential oil, prebiotic, and acidifier product (Biolex™). A total of 540 broiler chicks (Cobb 500) were allocated into three treatments, each with 12 replicates and 15 birds/replicate pen in a randomized complete block design. The three corn-soybean meal dietary...

INTRODUCTION Pioneer colonization of intestinal microbiota has a major effect on driving the maturation and composition course of microbial communities over time (Juricova et al., 2013; Rodrigues et al., 2019; Wilson et al., 2019). Later, the cross-talk between microbiota composition and immune cells has been highly associated with the establishment of immune competence (Crhanova et al., 2011; Chung et al., 2012; Schokker et al., 2017; Duan, 2018). Germ-free mouse models have...

Biological interplay between microbes and animals is based on molecular interactions. So, we know that pathogens attach to specific carbohydrate structures. What if we knew more about those target structures? This would bring development of pathogen binding supplements to the next level. The poster entitled “N-glycan profiling of chicken intestine as a tool for designing improved feed supplements” presented an...

INTRODUCTION Ostriches like any other poultry do not have teeth for chewing. They have a flat and broad beak for grasping or picking food and the tongue function as a prehensile organ and aids in swallowing feed. Thus, the birds require grits or other forms of particles with the aid of which the powerful ventriculus or gizzard musculature compress and break down feed into smaller particles for easy digestion and...

Introduction Market availability and fluctuation in the cost of conventional feed ingredients are pushing producers to increase inclusion of low-cost, fibre-rich co-products in the diets of monogastric animals. One major issue of this approach is that digestibility of high-fibre ingredients varies widely, with α-linked starch being digestible through hydrolytic–enzymatic action, but β-linked dietary fibres only being digested by exogenously supplied enzymes or...
