Poultry gut health

The efficient conversion of feed into its basic components for optimal nutrient absorption is vital for both broiler and broiler breeder production and welfare. Gut health, an intricate and complex area combining nutrition, microbiology, immunology and physiology, has a key role to play. When gut health is compromised, digestion and nutrient absorption are affected which, in turn, can have a detrimental effect on feed conversion leading to economic loss and a greater susceptibility to disease. In addition, recent changes in legislation on the use of antimicrobials, differing feed requirements and more efficient birds highlight the need for a better understanding of gut function and gut health.

INTRODUCTION Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are by-products obtained during production of biofuels as renewable energy sources. During starch fermentation from cereal grains, ethanol and CO 2 are produced; meanwhile, the remaining nutrients are concentrated in the DDGS fraction (Singh et al., 2005). Corn is the main cereal used in ethanol production in the United States; however, other grains such as wheat, barley, and sorghum are utilized in different...

1. Introduction Phytogenic feed additives (PFA) are the plant derived products used to improve performance of livestock and poultry (Windisch et al., 2008; Jacela et al., 2010). The PFA comprise of a wide variety of herbs, spices and products derived thereof and are mainly essential oils. This class of feed additives is at present used to a great extent as alternatives to the antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) in poultry and swine nutrition. Obviously, the ban imposed on the...

1. Introduction The modern broiler chickens are always vulnerable to impaired nutrient digestion, dysbacteriosis, cocci challenges, and exposure to Clostridium perfringens resulting in poor gut health and production performance. Previously, endogenous proteases were deemed to be sufficient for feed protein digestion [1, 2] despite the possibility of a considerable amount of undigested dietary protein reaching the hind gut [3-6]. Apajalahti and Vienola [7] are of the opinion that...

INTRODUCTION The continued use of antibiotics in feed has led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic organisms, which is a major concern in the poultry industry (Diarra et al., 2007; Garcia-Migura et al., 2014; Roth et al., 2019). Therefore, the use of in-feed antibiotics has been reduced, and the identification of alternative strategies to antibiotics has become a primary research focus. Comparisons of alternatives to antibiotics on gastrointestinal health, shown...

Background Recently, a comprehensive review paper devoted to roles of nano-Se in livestock and fish nutrition has been published in the Nanoscale Research Letters [1]. The authors described in great detail an issue related to nano-Se production and its possible applications in animal industry and medicine. Indeed, it is well established that many molecules presented as nanoparticles have unusual behaviour due to the new properties of such particles. In fact, in most of the...

Contamination by Mycotoxins: Causing failures in the antibiotic-free production. Many poultry and livestock producers worldwide are making serious efforts to reduce or eliminate the use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) in their farms. Going AGP-free is a complex process that includes adjustments in farm management, biosafety and feed formulation, among others. The ultimate target of these changes is to improve and maintain gut health, which is the basis of AGP replacement....

The gastrointestinal tract is one of the main organs affected by heat stress. Diarrhea, watery feces, digestive infections, inflammation of the intestinal tissues, etc are triggered by the exposure to high temperatures. In recent years, the gastrointestinal problems that happen during heat stress have been linked to a failure of the gut barrier function (leaky gut)....

INTRODUCTION Antibiotics used as growth promoters (AGP) have successfully controlled dysbiosis and enteropathogens for the past 50 years (1). However, the recent increase in worldwide non-AGP poultry production is challenging the industry in management, health, and animal welfare due to the increase of enteric and systemic diseases (2, 3). One of the most accepted theories of AGP mechanism is its role in reducing low-level inflammation (4) and immunologic stress (5) that can be...

I. INTRODUCTION The withdrawal of antibiotics has caused an increased prevalence of necrotic enteritis (NE) in broiler chickens, making it the most common disease in the poultry-industry globally. Direct fed microbials (DFMs) have been shown to have great potential as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs). Bacillus amyloliquefaciens produces several extracellular enzymes including cellulase, hemicellulose, amylase, xylanase and proteases. Its application has been...

Yeast cell wall (YCW) fractions have proven effective in reducing the incidence of necrotic enteritis induced by Clostridium perfringens. Dietary supplementation with YCWs stimulates the systemic innate immune responses of broiler chickens, suggesting the role of these products in regulating immune homeostasis (Alizadeh et al., 2016). In a proposed mode of action of YCW on bacteria, the branched lateral chains of the mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) in the YCW structure bind the bacteria and...

INTRODUCTION As a fungal secondary metabolite of the Aspergillus species, aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ) is known to be the most toxigenic mycotoxin (Yunus et al., 2011). Feed contamination with AFB 1 has been a major feed safety concern due to its negative effects on growth performance, production, hepatic functions, and immune system in many livestock species (Ledoux et al., 1999; Yarru et al., 2009; Andretta et al., 2011; Grenier and Applegate,...

INTRODUCTION Coccidiosis is an enteric disease caused by protozoa of the genus Eimeria that affects several animal species, including poultry. Eimeria multiplication in the intestinal epithelium leads to enterocyte destruction and severe tissue damage, which negatively affects poultry health and welfare status (1). Although difficult to predict, researchers have estimated that the loss in productivity induced by clinical and...
