Applications of In Ovo Technique for the Optimal Development of the Gastrointestinal Tract and the Potential influence on the establishment of its Microbiome in Poultry

Published: June 9, 2017
Summary
Introduction Given the fact that the poultry industry has been a main contributor to the U.S. food supply over the past two decades, with an increase from $44.4 billion in value of production in 2013 to $48.3 billion in 2014, the necessity of capitalizing on the production of poultry is evident (1, 2). With the increasing trend to systematically remove sub-therapeutic levels of antibiotics fro...

The investigations in this matter of aerly feeding, done by Uni, Z. and others, have had practical application and responses, on early growth, flock uniformity, better inmunological responses and lower mortality rates, during the first week of life and from there on. The future broiler production is getting really interesting. One section of the world like europe is going for slow growing chicken in the name of welfare and taste. The scientific world is working in the other direction to enhance the productivity by reducing the number of days to produce and less feed per unit of chicken. Geneticists are continuing to enhance growth by selection. Enhancing the productivity even before the chick is born. The breeder vaccination programs are getting crowded to boost the maternal antibodies. It will be interesting to see if we can inject vaccines, immunostimulants, nutrients and prebiotics in the egg itself and produce a broiler ready in 29 days with 1:1 feed conversion. The new entrants in to broiler chicken production are confused.
