Cocci in 24th week in layer

Published: September 26, 2019
By: Manish Kumar

Dear Doctors, Please suggest which medicine should I follow in cocci in my layer bird of 24th week. Production is 87 percent. Daily mortality is around 35 birds. Please suggest on urgent basis. I am using supercox medicine from last 3 days but there is no improvement in birds.

Regards,

Manish.

In the US we are limited to using amprolium in the water at 0.025% for three days then 0.0125% for another 3 days. Adding an antibiotic to combat secondary Clostridial infection (necrotic enteritis) is important. We add 25 grams of bacitracin per ton for 2 weeks.

Dear Manish, I do not know what are the registered molecules (chemicals and ionophores) in your country for egg production and mainly if there is some withdrawal period. But if cocci is identified, you should cure the birds, quickly. Amprolium is an example but check with your country vets. Coccidiosis or enterite outbreaks in layers at 24 - 26th weeks of age are typically a consequence of cocci infection and lack of cocci-immunity during the rearing period (pullets). So for the next flocks, adapt a preventive program to make the pullets more immunised against cocci or raised within an environnement with less pathogenic bacteria or protozoa. For this preventive program chemicals, ionophores may do the job, but as you will be pro-active you may use alternative and natural product that will be as efficient as usual program limiting any potential of resistance for older birds. Bertrand Medina, Hi, cocci in layers is, not just coccidiosis, but always be mixed with bacterial invasion like Clostridium. Hence better use ESB3 in water as per the severity fix a dose, and along with this use a probiotic in water like Biomin? pro, for 5 or 6 days.
The medication for 6 days.

In my opinion robenidine is the safest option in layer for prevention.. However once the disease is evident amprolium is the therapeutic option..

You may go with Maduramycin@ 500 gm/ton of feed along with that a natural antidiarrheal may give prompt reduction in mortality rate

I recommend using tolterazuril in the 800 Lit of water at 1500 ml for 8 hours. After that using the Phytomax Cox herbal composition in the diet. In addition, use vitamin A, E and K solution in water.

During production period ionophores are not recommended in layer birds, As they may produce negative effect on egg production and egg size. However the best way was vaccination of birds against coccidiosis on first three days of age. I have seen that it is a general problem in layer birds during 16weeks to 26 weeks of age. Because here we are providing layer ration to the birds with almost 4% calcium, hence feed pH becomes more alkaline.( pH of Gizzard reaches upto 5.5). So You have no option other than using any chemical like Amprolium to control coccidiosis for a minimum period of three days. Also You should administer any antibiotic to control clostridial infection and any acidifier like organic acid in feed and in litter material like alum.

Tahir Naseem Dear SIr....Dosage of supercox is 1gm / 1 litre for first three days. My question is whether this should be given continuously througout the day. Say if the birds drink the water within 2 hours, should I again give this dosage to them....If I have 10 birds.....

As treatment of this case amprolium 50-60-% in drinking water for 5 days, at the same time use vitamin k and vitamin AD3E for 7 days, for secondary enteritis infection use amoxicillin in drinking water for at least 3 days. For the coming Flocks it is better to use vaccines in the first week to prevent the infection during the production period.

I think that you are not using cage for layer in production, the chemical was recommended above can be used to treat it and secondary bacterial enteritis, but for prevention of it in future and in this flock and to repair damaged gut you can use herbal in feed. And also for next flock must induce immunity either by vaccination or by using chemicals in feed. Also, if the house of production is not the same house for rearing you can use anti coccidial disinfectant to lowering rate of Eimeria in the production house before transferring the hens. if you use a cage for production and now you are facing cocci you must know that feed or water is exposed to wild birds and needs to manage it.

Hi
The best control of coccidiosis in lying birds:
First, diagnose the disease.
Second, used probiotics+ prebiotic so for seven to ten days it will give you a good result and start to produce immunity against the coccidiosis infection. The semipro biotic reduce the number of sprocyct in fesses and I enhance the start produce the immunity against the natural infection
Third, besides the treatment must be Clemend the flour from the fesses.

Nagwa Abd El Aziz Shalaby The effect is doubtful from pro and prebiotics, I think that the damage from coccidiosis will be much earlier than the immunity is formed. And there are two ways out: hygiene and chemotherapy

Dear Manish,

Use Diclazuril + Enramycin in feed for 10 days. It will be very effective & mortality gets decreasing after 4 days after treatment. After the above treatment use good probiotic in feed.

The use of probiotics and prebiotics for the management of coccidiosis is still very strange to me, and I will need more clarification on their kinds of action on protozoa like Eimeria species.
We understand perfectly well the mechanism if action of probiotics against the flagellated gram negative enterobacteria through probiotics blockages of predilection sites for the gram negative enterobactaria, such as shigella, salmonella, pasteurella and E coli species, but kindly let me know how coccidia is checkmated in the host by probiotics and prebiotics.
I may agree with a theory of synergy of coccidiostat with probiotics or probiotics as a non antibiotic growth promoters to manage a secondary bacteria infection in coccidiosis and help to improve FC of the host animal, especially in broiler production.

Some of the research we have been conducting looking at organic iron in diets for broilers might be appropriate here for layers as well. With cocci having a high iron requirement for growth and detrimental actions, our research has shown that by including an organic iron source (like SQM Iron) into the diets reduces the growth rate of cocci. This would allow one to at least delay a cocci outbreak if not eliminate it from occurring, depending on how long one can keep their numbers down. Organic iron is "definitely NOT" a treatment for a cocci outbreak. Hopefully, though good nutrition for the bird and limited nutrition for the pathogens, we can have extended periods of high level production.

Dear Manish,
i fully agree with Dr Yasin Amro and Dr Nishant Patel. I found the same problem in one of the flock under my consultancy. Its a sporadic one. but should be treated with full course of Anticoccidial lIke Amprolium for 3-2-3 day basis or 4-2-3 basis and Should be given BMD 350 gm -500 gm per ton of feed during the treatment. Enramycin would be another choice to add in feed instead of BMD.
If suitable Give Amoxicilin in water @ 40 mg/ Kg body wt for 4-5 days with Vit K and Pure Vit A in water
After 8 days of treatment with above medicines start Good and concentrated probiotic for next 7 days in Feed.
USE combination of Essential Oil along with Acidifiers in feed continuously. with Good and concentrated Enzyme. Be cautious while purchasing Fiber rich ingredients.
Controlling of Fly Population will improve Farm environment.
