Heat stress is considered an influential factor in the profitability of dairy farms, especially in the hot regions of the world. In the first part of my article, previous to this, I described how heat stress impairs cow's performance and farm profitability. In the current article, I plan to show, based on the literature, my own experience and calculations, how proper cooling can reduce the negative effect of heat stress and contribute to increasing farm profitability.

There is no question that the ongoing narrative concerning climate change and various “man-induced” gas emissions (including ammonia, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) includes dairy production. While many producers (and others involved in agriculture) may not agree with the significance or level of gas contributions of agriculture to the total production, that disagreement may be somewhat irrelevant. The discussion, social media uproar, political activism and...

Those hoping that 2022 will bring calm after multiple market disruptions will likely be disappointed. Although markets are expected to settle somewhat in 2022, many drivers of recent change will remain. The stage is set for animal protein company leaders to find and pursue opportunities in this relatively challenging market context.

Importance of animal origin foods and trends of consumption Given their high nutrient density, animal-origin foods have been staples of the human diet along our evolutionary history. Indeed, evidence of meat and bone marrow consumption in hominins can be traced back to around 2.5-2.8 million years ago (De Heinzelin et al., 1999, Thompson et al., 2019). On the other hand, milk from ruminants was introduced into our diets more recently, at least 8500...
Global drivers impacting food production and consumption The agricultural sector is faced with the daunting challenge of producing food for a growing global population, which is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100 (UN WPP 2019), with sub-Saharan African countries accounting for more than half of the growth of the world’s population between 2019 and 2050 (Figure 1; UN WPP 2019). Figure 1: ...
U.S. dairy and livestock trends point to a decline in methane emissions. While the greenhouse gas has been used by climate change activists to clobber animal agriculture, science points to a different trend.
Methane as a greenhouse gas has long been the Achilles’ heel for activists to attack animal agriculture. That appears to be shifting as scientific discovery suggests a reduction in atmospheric methane over the United States.

Heat stress is considered one of the most influential factors in the profitability of dairy farms, especially in the hot regions of the world. In the conferences and publications that I have published over the years, I mainly dealt with the economic benefits that may arise from the proper installation and operation of the means to dissipate the heat generated by the cows.
The purpose of this article is to raise awareness that the inability to cope with heat stress is of financial...

Over the past two decades research in milking management has focused on decreasing the time that units are attached to cows by researching optimal teat stimulation and prep-lag time, pulsation ratios and liner compression and raising automatic take-off settings.
Optimal teat stimulation and prep lag time
Prep Lag time is the time from the start of teat stimulation, to milking unit attachment.

Those days are long gone when cows were enclosed within a pen to restrain their movement. Now they are set free at the farm until brought inside the milking area. As for the milking of cows is concerned, it is no longer a back-breaking job.
Nowadays, milking is done with the help of robotic automation, without involving humans. This method significantly alleviates the workload of dairy farmers.
