Poultry management

Poultry management usually refers to the husbandry practices or production techniques that help to maximize the efficiency of production. Sound management practices are very essential to optimize production. Scientific poultry management aims at maximizing returns with minimum investment. A carefully controlled environment that avoids crowding, chilling, overheating, or frightening is almost universal in poultry farming. Cannibalism, which expresses itself as toe picking, feather picking, and tail picking, is controlled by debeaking at one day of age and by other management practices. The feeding, watering, egg gathering, and cleaning operations are highly mechanized. Birds are usually housed in wire cages with two or three animals per cage, depending on the species and breed, and three or four tiers of cages superposed to save space. Cages for egg-laying birds have been found to increase production, lower mortality, reduce cannibalism, lower feeding requirements, reduce diseases and parasites, improve culling, and reduce both space and labour requirements.

Introduction The lesser mealworm Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is a ubiquitous and significant insect pest in commercial poultry house litter. The young chicks ingest larval and adult of the lesser mealworms, which negatively affects their performance and behavior, and causes gastrointestinal lesions (Despins & Axtel, 1995; Japp, 2008). The insect plays a potential role as vector of viruses, protozoa (Eimeria), and bacteria (Campylobacter and...

Water is one of the most important feed ingredients in the diet. Clean water improves the animal’s performance and acidifying drinking water may even suppress bacteria that have a negative influence on performance. But there’s more to acidifying the water than just adding a simple acid. By Ing. Pascal Philipsen, technical-marketing manager Impextraco, Belgium We sometimes tend to forget that drinking water has a large impact on the health...

Often heard, frequently misunderstood, “biosecurity” is a set of practices that all poultry owners should know and implement to protect their poultry flocks from a disease. Birds that are raised under pastured or free-range management styles are particularly in need of attention due to their increased exposure to environmental disease sources.     What is biosecurity?  Biosecurity is the practice of minimizing...

Water is a necessary component of producing a safe and wholesome source of protein. While the poultry and the egg industry has a long history of efficiently utilizing water in poultry and egg processing plants, the industry consistently faces new challenges ranging from bacteria thresholds in stormwater to the carryover of antimicrobial compounds into wastewater treatment plants. The U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY) is hosting an education program that examines some of the...

Background An H5 HPAIV outbreak that began in December 2014 and lasted 6 months through June 2015 was the 5th highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) outbreak in the US since the 1920’s and was the most geographically widespread. Direct and indirect costs to the US economy were estimated to be near $3.3 billion USD [1]. The hemagglutinin (HA) gene was determined to belong to clade 2.3.4.4 of the goose/Guangdong/1996 (GS/GD/96) H5 lineage of HPAIV and was...

Introduction During summer, high ambient temperature is one of the most important environmental stressors adversely affecting poultry health [1–2]. Hens to loss heat are limited due to feathering and the absence of sweat glands [1]. A hen can tolerate and adapt to ambient temperatures up to 25°C (77°F); temperatures above this level can lead to heat stress (HS) as a combination of hen’s physical heat production plus the environmental heat load is greater...

Water is the most important nutrient for poultry. Unfortunately it is very much neglected by most poultry farmers in Asian countries and other countries in the world. Water has numerous functions in the body of chicken. It is involved in all digestion processes, it transport all nutrients in the body of chicken, regulates the body temperature and is responsible for elimination of wastes from chicken’s body. Most importantly it is involved in numerous metabolic and enzymatic actions in...
