Pigs require a number of essential nutrients to meet their needs for maintenance, growth, reproduction, lactation, and other functions. However, factors such as genetic variation, environment, availability of nutrients in feedstuffs, disease levels, and other stressors may increase the needed level of some nutrients for optimal performance and reproduction.
Swine require six general classes of nutrients: water, carbohydrates, fats, protein (amino acids), minerals, and vitamins. Energy, although not a specific nutrient, is an important nutritional component and is primarily derived from the oxidation of carbohydrates and fats. In addition, amino acids (from protein) that exceed the animal’s requirements for maintenance and tissue protein synthesis provide energy when their carbon skeletons are oxidized. Antibiotics, chemotherapeutic agents, microbial supplements (prebiotics and probiotics), enzymes, and other feed additives are often added to swine diets to increase the rate and efficiency of gain, to improve digestibility, and for other purposes, but they are not considered nutrients.
Pigs require a more concentrated diet and should be fed a less-fibrous feed than cattle, sheep, or horses. As they grow, their nutritional requirements change and the diet should meet their needs in various phases of growth and stages of production.
Introduction Numerous reviews have been written to describe the specificities and advantages of the pig model in studies focusing on behavior, nutrition and neuroscience (Kornum and Knudsen, 2011, Roura et al., 2016, Val-Laillet, 2019). Besides the fact that the pig is an animal species of obvious interest in agriculture and human food production, it also has incomparable advantages when it comes to studying the consequences of the nutritional environments, diets or feed in...

Botanicals represent a wide class of complex compounds that naturally contain active principles with numerous biological functions. Among them, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions are of key interest to support intestinal health during stressful phases. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of a thymol-based blend of botanicals (BOT) to protect intestinal Caco-2 cells from the damages induced by an inflammatory challenge in vitro. Caco-2 cells were differentiated on...
Introduction On average, piglet livability in Europe is 83%, ranging from 70% to 90%. It is determined by the number of still births and pre-weaning mortality in a given litter. With the increasing litter size, piglet survival is a persistent challenge to pig producers. This calls for a feeding and management strategy to improve nutrition and wellbeing of the sow in the transition phase covering late gestation, farrowing, lactation and breeding. The transition period...
The APIs market in November generally remained stable, continuing the lingering trend since August. Supply-side costs are rising, while deals are constrained by downstream demand. Downstream purchases are still subject to the actual need, and there needs more confidence and willingness to stock up and build the position. The supply-demand game has been held this month. It is expected that the recent market trend will continue oscillation and consolidation and need a solid new factor to break...
The feed intake of sows is important, because sows are becoming more productive thanks to the continuous genetic improvements made by pig breeding companies. This increase in litter size leads to a huge burden on the sow to feed her litter. The objective of the sows is simple: to supply more milk - and for this purpose, they need to eat. Listen to Professor Bruno Silva from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil to know more!...
