Extrusion

Welcome to the page about Extrusion of Engormix; a source of knowledge on Extrusion.
Edible oils obtained from oilseeds such as soybeans and canola are used during the frying foods, and as ingredients in the preparation of pastries and condiments. Edible oils can also be used to improve the texture and flavor of food. Before the oil can be processed into a usable form it is first extracted from the oilseed. While Super-critical Fluid...

In Part 1 we discussed the basic design components of an extruder.  In Part 2, we will dive deeper into the importance of extrusion cooking technology essentially combining extrusion and cooking in one unit operation. The heat for the cooking process can be supplied from external sources (by heating the extruder barrel or...

Cooking of foods is an everyday operation that finds usefulness in both domestic and commercial settings. In cooking, heat is used to prepare food for consumption. There are several reasons for cooking but at its core, cooking converts food into a more digestible form. This improved digestibility means that the calories and nutrients...

Overview – What Is Extrusion? The word  extrusion  means shaping a material or a blend of materials that can be plasticized (able to be melted and become fluid-like), and is pumpable by forcing through a restricted opening or  die . The versatility of the process is evident in its ability to produce different types of foods. The power of the process can be further appreciated by its ability to create foods of varying textures...

Today I would like to discuss the basics of how an extrusion facility works and how to calculate if the facility will be financially feasible. In this scenario, we will consider all the meal and oil produced is sold into the meal market. For starters, let’s say you are begin from scratch. You will need to invest in land, a building, and...

We trial products with high fat. The fat before extruding around 7-8%. Using a single screw with high shear screw configuration and with die design for floating fish. The issue with the product is the size between the front and end is not symmetrical. What is the root cause of this issue? Is that from machine process or raw material? ...

In the past using a single screw extruder ( insta pro) the cell wall of the rice bran has been ruptured enabling the oil to get separated from the bran however the extraction of the oil physically from the bran were not studied.it is now proposed by me to extract rice bran oil directly at the rice mills itself, first by rupturing the cell and then using an expeller (oil mill) to extract the oil. I need advise on how the entire 20/23 % oil in the bran can be physically separated once the cell...

I have an issue with my double screw extruder... When used to process an aggregate materials formulation of less than 30% CP, it will come out fine (I mean - in good shape and floating). But, when I use an aggregate materials formulation of more than 30% CP, it'll come out very poor in shape and will not float. So, anyone with related issues or solution ideas could you please share? ...

Aquatic food pellets conventionally sold for the raising of fish or other aquatic species have been generally of two types. The pellets have either been of sufficient density to allow them to sink in the water as would be necessary for the feeding of crustaceans or bottom feeding fish, or they have been of a reduced density to allow them to float on the surface of the water. The floating type of pellet has typically been produced by an...

High-shear dry extruded corn and soybeans and the quest for higher growth performance in modern broiler genetics. Feeding young broilers during the first 10 days post-hatch is the new frontier in poultry nutrition. The same holds true for any effort to boost life-time growth performance in modern genetics through nutrition. Research and commercial experience have shown that it is possible to boost overall growth performance by...

This article was originally published in Aquafeed (2013), Vol. 5, No.3, 41-45.   The single screw extruder has been the heartbeat of dry pet food and aquatic feed for over 50 years. Today, the single screw extruder still is the choice for manufacturing dry expanded pet food as opposed to baked or pelleted feed.   ...
