Broiler Farming changes in Brooding Procedures

Broiler Farming Needs Revolutionary Changes in Brooding Procedures

Published: March 27, 2009
Summary
Present day, broiler farming has become as much expensive as it has never been though. In countries like Pakistan majority of the broiler farmers are no more capable of continuing their broiler farming, due to increasing costs of farm operations, like feed, medicine, sudden rise in chicks rate, electricity, litter, brooding, etc. The purpose of this article is to invite the poultry scientists to...

Mr Sadaat Ali Thanks for kind suggestion of making floor with metallic sheets for brooding to minimise cost of farming for a poor farmer. My request is would also calculate the cost of iron sheets put on floor of a brooding room if i am going to brood about 7000 chicks. Second question how would heat waves travel under these sheets ... is that possible from a ditch u made? thanks Zubair

Dear Doctor, Good Evening ! thanx for the article and it seems your idea is very effective for low cost brooding practices. but i think it would be more effective if you could show us by diagram the placement of fire ditches and its dimension. Thanx / Regards, Dr Bikash Malla

Dear all, To my knowledge and Old experience, that Woods in all Chicks Brooding period, has been of High Value and benificial on the long run period of Brooding. As we know Woods has an very important value under the chicks due to its absorbtion of the chicks feces and secondly, it preserve the Heat from the Brooders and is not expensive. But the Metalic Sheets which has been suggested in the article below, is not practicle due to the uncontrolable Heat reflections to it and mainly most important, Its High Cost. Best Regards, Nezam Abboud BSC Agr.

Hi, A good try to bail out the small farmers, as far as the purpose is survived with out an impact on the environment. The heat conductivity of the iron sheet would be a major hurdle in this trial!!!!!!!!!!.

Dear Doc, Idea seems to be good theoretically. But very difficult to practice. Maintenance of RIGHT temperature throughout would be very difficult. Brooding is the most important stage in the chicks life and such ADJUSTMENTS may not help. Nevertheless, you have an innovative mindset, which can be used well for the benefit of poultry farmers. Let me share my experince of broiler /layer chick brooding The first few weeks temp of brooder house very crucial as under:- 1st weektemp 95 F 2nd weektemp 90 F 3rd weektemp 85 F 4th week temp 80 F Most of the time during winter in south asian countries it becomes practically difficult to maintain such temp specially during night time and with the result chicks loose body weight by depleting body energy to maintain body temp. We have tried alterantive to electric brooder i.e 1.gas brooder- if gas is available 2.kerosene - wig stovewith blue flamecovered with 3ftx 3ft ( 9sqFt) AC sheet 3.kerosene wig stove covered with MS 10kg capacity bowl ,fille with sand 4.using soft wood coal heaters 5.using hard coal heater ( take the heater inside the brooder house onlyafter smoke has completly gone) 6.using saw wood dust heaters Sealing the doors and windows with HDEp sheeting during night Giving luke warm medicated water to day old chicks by keeping brooder on 12 hrs before arrival of chicks. ensure that one attendend stays with the the brooder house. try one as above and you will be happy regards Dr S Chandra

The author of the article has given an idea which is not practically possible to apply in the brooding of poultry chicks. Suppose somebody put this in the shed what about the litter being scattered by the chicks and burning their feet on the hot metal sheets. The author should first read some material about brooding technics and then start given such novel ideas. I have an experience of more than 35 years and was the pioneer in the running of the first intensive broiler farm in the province of punjab a capacity of 6.5 lac. We were using gas cylinders for brooding chicks with results matching or even better than any international broiler farm.

Dear Doc, I appreciate your innovative ideas in the area of chicks brooding!!! If you can supplement this article with best designs of shed then it will be workable & easy to understand the concept. Please if you have such designs paste on this site.Apart from your views in this area i want to add some more techniques of chick brooding, First thing to keep in mind that Indian Poultry industry is growing with 10-125annually. Looking after all modernization era & change in life style we have to adopt such a manage mental techniques where requirement of manpower should be less.As industry has a bright future in the world & peoples are shifting from Red meat to poultry meat, our poultry projects should be Hi tech so that we can compete in all quality parameters in the Globe. Looking after those changes one time better & hi tech investment is necessary while constructing the poultry sheds & we have to wrap the traditional methods to come in flow. 1. To resolve the problem of electricity at farm level you have to adapt the techniques like Solar energy or wind power so that your project will be not dependent on others for electricity. 2. Construction of shed should be in such a way that you will resolve your all manage mental problems from that viz. Uniformity in brooding temperature , litter condition, feeding systems etc. Till the time of change definitely your innovative idea of brooding will always be welcome & will definitely helpful to our indian poultry industry. regards, Dr.Jaydip

It is a dynamic idea by the author. To fix a metal sheet 60cm space between the Cemented floor and the metal plate. In this not mention the thickness of the metal Plate and the heat conductivity of the metal. I think this article is just like a novel Because chicks have no sense of humor to control yourself and your feet burn From hot metal plates. Nothing is impossible in future but at that time it is not Possible. Dr. Sohail Ahmad.
