Poultry diseases

When chickens are healthy they consume less feed and produce more quality eggs. They are less trouble to look after and less money is spent on medical costs. Poultry disease can spread rapidly among chickens because they are usually kept together in the chicken house. The chickens share the same feeders and drinkers, which can spread disease and infections rapidly from sick to healthy chickens. In intensive egg production systems, much focus is placed on the egg laying performance of the flock. Poultry diseases can negatively affect the health and performance of your flock. Important and common poultry diseases include necrotic enteritis, chronic respiratory diseases, gangrenous dermatitis, fowl cholera, and avian influenza.
The Australian Poultry Science Symposium is the premier avian science conference in Australia and attracts delegates from across Australia and from all around the World. It will take place from Feb. 13-15 and the major themes will be Gut Health and Physiology, The Challenge of Low Protein Diets, Adult Bird Nutrition and Management, and Vitamin D in Eggs. The 2017 event is going to be a very exciting one. We are moving away from the University Campus this year, into an inner...

1. Introduction The occurrence of ‘wet litter’ in meat chicken sheds is associated with concerns regarding animal welfare, flock health, food safety, environmental impacts and reductions in production efficiency. Mitigating wet litter will only be achieved when there is thorough understanding of the multidimensional causal factors. This will require a multidisciplinary approach to understand the hydrology in...

Gumboro Disease or Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) is one of the most common diseases of commercial poultry in Asia. In the clinical acute form (vvIBDV), the disease causes significant economic losses due to mortality, reduced performance and immunosupression that lead to increased susceptibility to other diseases. The IBD virus is extremely resistant to environmental conditions and chemicals. Therefore the control of the disease must take into consideration strict biosecurity combined with...

Introduction Immunosuppression in poultry causes widespread and significant economic losses, by decreasing vaccine effectiveness, causing excessive post-vaccine reactions, and allowing secondary infections like E. coli to establish, requiring antibiotic treatment. Dexter M. Abrigo and Stephane Lemiere* explain how to reduce immunosuppression to build a good and solid immune...

Introduction Antibiotics have been used for decades to improve poultry performance with low cost of implementation and ease adding to feed and water (Fernandez-Rubio et al., 2009). However, currently concern about possible antibiotic residues and resistance has arisen restrictions of antibiotics use in poultry (Jan et al., 2007; Saberfar et al., 2008). Because of this fact, industry and researchers have had to look for...

Each year, layer flocks in Denmark are infected with Salmonella. These infections, which are caused by several different serological types, are usually detected by means of compulsory Salmonella monitoring samples, and usually do not cause any clinical symptoms in the hens. Eggs from such Salmonella-infected flocks constitute a well-known risk to humans who eat raw or insufficiently heat-treated eggs (EFSA/EDC 2013). In 2013, however, the infection-source report...

On 27 July 2015, Germany’s veterinary authorities notified the European Commission via an ADNS and OIE announcement that a highly pathogenic avian influenza H7N7 had broken out in a poultry flock of 14,104 layer hens in Herzlake Municipality, in the rural district of Emsland, Lower Saxony (see the flags on the map below). An egg-laying decline, reduced food intake and a higher mortality rate were observed on 24 July. For these reasons, samples were taken to be analysed for...

Gut health is a very important determinant for health and performance in production animals. The intestinal innate immune system is central in maintaining gut health. Each feed intake leads to postprandial (low-grade) inflammation response in the (small) intestines, the magnitude of which is related to the caloric value, the glycemic index and specific feed components. If not contained, postprandial inflammation could lead to undesired consequences such as muscle...

Managers of broiler parent stock face the challenge of intense feed restriction (Renema et al., 2007) because of over 4-fold increases in body weight (BW) over the last 50 years (Zuidhof et al., 2014b). Body weight control is of primary importance for broiler hatching egg operators. Therefore, feed allocation decisions have become a major focus. How much should you feed the birds? It depends on their age, their BW, rate of gain, and level of production. How much...

Big liver and spleen disease or hepatitis splenomegaly syndrome (HSS) is clinically characterized by increased mortality and decreased egg production in both broiler breeder hens and egg-type chickens, usually ranging from 30 to 72 wk of age. On gross examination, blood-tinged fluid can frequently be observed in the coelomic cavity, and liver and spleen are typically both enlarged (19) . ...
