He received his Ph.D. in Zoology from The Natural History Museum, London, and the University of Leicester (UK) in 1996, with focus on wastewater microbiology. After spending 4 years in Japan, as a Postdoctoral Scientist in marine microbiology, he joined the aquaculture nutrition team at the Oceanic Institute in Hawaii, where he carried out work on microbial dynamics in zero exchange shrimp systems.
