Phytogenics in poultry nutrition

Phytogenics, also known as phytobiotics, are natural bioactive compounds of botanical origin that are used as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) and are added to feed to enhance animal performance. Although phytogenics encompass a wide variety of substances of biological origin, formulation, chemical characterization, and purity, they can be classified into four groups: (1) herbs (products obtained from flowering, woody, and nonperennial plants); (2) botanicals (whole or processed parts of a plant, such as roots, leaves, tree bark, and spices); (3) essential oils (hydro-distilled extracts of volatile plant compounds); and (4) oleoresins (anhydrous solvent-based extracts). These plant-derived products do not contain residues, are natural, and are less toxic than synthetic antibiotics or inorganic chemicals. Many are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and can be used as feed additives in animal nutrition.

Antibiotics have been added to livestock in Industrial farms since 1946 to caused animal grow faster and put on weight more efficiently. Between 1985 and 2001, the use of antibiotics in feed for industrial livestock production rose a starling 50%. As global demand for animal protein grows, antibiotics use to raise food-producing animals in intensive production–mostly to promote growth rather than treat disease. According to a new report by the FDA 2010,...

The gastrointestinal tract is confronted with a cornucopia of diverse chemicals, pathogens and physicochemical states that it must analyze and react to appropriately to optimize nutrition and to defend against harm. It presents the largest and most vulnerable surface to the outside world. Integrated responses to these challenges require the gut to sense its environment. This it does through a range of detection systems for specific chemical...

by Sam Shafer Researchers from Egypt and Saudi Arabia conducted a study to determine if adding eucalyptus (EL) powder as a dietary supplementation would have an effect on productive performance and immune response in two varieties of Japanese quail. Poultry Farmers have turned some of their attention towards natural feed additives to improve productive performance and enhance the health status of poultry flocks. This study was conducted to determine if...

1. Introduction Heat stress (HS) has undesired effects on the growth performance [1,2] and meat quality [3] of broiler chickens. During HS, chickens seek to dissipate unwanted and excess body heat by increasing panting, resulting in alteration of blood acid/base status, which in turn can give rise to respiratory alkalosis [4] and disruptions in muscle membrane integrity [3]. Additionally, the work required to maintain body temperature consumes diverts energy from metabolic...

INTRODUCTION Choline, a rediscovered vitamin B 4 that mostly exists in the form of phospholipids, plays a critical role in several biological functions in poultry. It is essential for building and maintaining cell membranes and organelles, such as mitochondria and microsomes, and for normal maturation of the cartilage matrix of the bone [1]. Moreover, it is an essential component of acetylcholine, the most common neurotransmitter in the nervous system involved in the...

There is a strong link between the stress and immune response of the birds. This article takes the learnings from the breakthrough work of research done by Selye in 1936 and Faber in 1964. Selye is the first scientist to give a scientific explanation for biological stress through General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) model. Faber has reviewed more than 100 research articles to check the relevance of GAS model in Poultry science. ...

The global feed phytogenics market, an intrinsic sub-vertical of the food, nutrition, and animal feed industry, has been observing massive growth over the recent years, subject to mounting prevalence of livestock diseases and deteriorating animal health. In fact, reports suggest that livestock producers lose up to USD 21 billion to animal diseases every year. This count also disrupts the living of nearly 1 billion people who rely massively on livestock products like eggs, dairy, and meat....
