Poultry House Air Filtration

Published: October 22, 2015
Summary
Figure 1. FAPP Poultry house at UGA Poultry Research Center   With growing concerns about avian influenza some poultry producers are wondering if there are ways to filter the air coming into their houses. Though on the surface this may seem like a good idea, the fact is that filtering incoming air is extremely difficult and costly. Furthermore, we must ask ourselves if filtering the a...

The industry is trying to get in to Antibiotic free products. In a Broiler production house the volume of air required to be handled goes high only for 15-20 days. The maintenance can be taken up after each flock. I feel that though the cost of installation and maintenance is high, it will be worthwhile to know the cost factor involved. If done properly, this will be the foolproof way of chicken production lowest levels of bacteria and virus. Dr.T.Kotaiah Indbro India

Using ozone in a poultry house has shown to have limited benefits. We have tested ionized air in a poultry house and were not able to document a reduction in pathogens. It is not that these technologies might not provide some benefits but it is very difficult to "sanitize" a poultry house.

Hi Gents, it is interesting topic for more research. May I get brief idea of cost to have HEPA filters in a poultry house producing eggs for vaccine production or SPF eggs? and is it feasible to install in normal poultry houses to secure from diseases.

Poultry house air filtration is an essential part of keeping the air in your poultry housing clean and healthy for your birds. Installing a proper air filtration system with the right filter media can help reduce dust levels and odors, as well as removing airborne diseases and other contaminants before they can enter the house, ensuring that your birds remain healthy. Different types of filter media are available to suit different situations, such as polyester batting, expanded metal sheet screens, synthetic fiber sheets, foam filters, and more. It is important to select a filter media that is appropriate for your specific environment in order to achieve the best air quality and overall health of your poultry flock.

Birds, like any live being, like the natural air movement. The temperature varies from season to season and also on daily basis. Sudden rise or fall makes the life distressed. The living body adjusts to these fluctuations. some help like adding to the speed of the airflow or cooling by sprinkling water helps the live birds to adjust faster. Hence open sided houses with natural air movement is the best for the live animals/ birds. Depending on the prevailing environment, the hoses should be designed in width ( too wide houses block cross air movement), side height, Roof ventilation, and area per bird.
We close the houses against the nature and get in to trouble of "providing comfort". We spend 4 or 5 times more money on the closed house compared to the open sided house. The provider of the house (seller) recomends more number of birds per house to offset the cost per bird. This adds additional technical load on the owner to provide artificial ventilation, volume, volume per bird, inlet management and outlet management beside the power required to run to system.
The farmer is purchasing a closed house (trouble) with money, runs them at a high cost, bears the depreciation of items involved and worries about the breaks in running the house.
Let the farmer and the birds enjoy the nature and make them learn to adjust to the nature.

People are thinking air filtration will keep bacteria n virus level low, and improve the health of the birds. Bacteria n virus enter through water, feed, insects, rodents, air, workers, visiting supervisor s, managers n veterinarians, chicks suppliers, vaccines used etc. Air filterstion is no solution for reducing the bacteria n virus population in the poultry house.

That is true, ventilation in poultry houses does not stop disease causing micro-organisms from entering poultry houses.

Air cool pads cannot stop entry of viruses. There are few specific pathogen free houses which are fitted with microbial filters and the houses are maintained under positive pressure. When the door is opened filtered air comes out but out side air cannot enter the house. S.p.f birds are not vaccinated but live in ultimate disease free environment. The eggs produced from these birds are used for vaccine production. The houses with cooling pads work under negative pressure created by exhaust fans.
