Introduction Mastitis is a worldwide problem of dairy production characterized by physical and chemical changes in milk. The microbiological and pathological changes in the glandular tissue of the udder alter the quality of milk. Mastitis has emerged as a health hazard responsible for the economic losses in dairy animals (Cady et al., 1983). It has been noted that amongst all diseases, mastitis is most expensive and ranks at the highest point list of disease of dairy animals by...

Introduction The transition period, 3 weeks before to 3 weeks after parturition, is important for health, reproduction, production and profitability of dairy cows (Bertoni et al. , 2008). In this period cows are affected by different stressors including the increase of body lipid mobilization, oxidative stress, major changes in endocrine status, and altered immune function, which together result in an increased risk of diseases (Jonsson et al. ,...

1. Introduction Inflammation contributes to a variety of human and veterinary diseases, including mastitis. Bovine mastitis caused by Streptococcus uberis results in severe damage to milkproducing tissues as a result of an uncontrolled inflammatory response. Previous clinical and histopathological data suggested that disruption of the endothelial barrier contributed to disease pathology. For example, S....

Escherichia coli bacteria are a major cause of clinical coliform mastitis in dairy cattle. Uncontrolled bacterial replication caused by dysfunctional immune responses results in severe mammary tissue damage and death. Excessive production of reactive metabolites (RM) by phagocytic cells results in oxidative mammary tissue damage observed during coliform mastitis. Increased metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) such as arachidonic acid (AA) generates...

Introduction In spite of considerable progress in improvement of milk quality, mastitis continues to be the most frequent and costly disease of dairy cows, however few veterinarians are actively involved in mastitis control programs. On most farms, detection, diagnosis and administration of treatments for clinical mastitis are the responsibility of farm personnel and veterinarians are often consulted only when a case...

Introduction Control of mastitis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus has resulted in reductions in bulk tank somatic cell count (SCC) but many herds continue to struggle with treatment of clinical mastitis caused by environmental pathogens. On many modern dairy farms, mastitis is caused by an increasingly diverse group of opportunistic pathogens (Figure 1). Common environmental mastitis pathogens...

Introduction    The technical definition of mastitis is “inflammation of the mammary gland” but on a practical basis, almost all bovine mastitis is caused by bacteria [1]. Appropriate mastitis control is based on knowledge of the etiology, thus identification of pathogens is a fundamental aspect of mastitis control programs. Mastitis occurs after an infective dose of a pathogenic organism passes through the streak...

The Dairy Focus Team at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has developed the Dairy Focus Somatic Cell Count Calculator, which allows producers to analyze their test day milk numbers and take appropriate action regarding somatic cell count. The main goal of the Dairy Focus Somatic Cell Count Calculator is to assist dairy producers in making management decisions on an individual herd level, which will improve overall health and decrease economic losses due to mastitis. Making these...

Mastitis is the most prevalent production disease in dairy herds world-wide and is responsible for several production effects (Henri et al., 2003). On account of its causing serious wastage and undesirable milk quality, is emerging as a major challenge among the others in dairy development of tropics. Subclinical mastitis was found more important in India varying from 10–50% in cows and 5–20% in buffaloes than clinical mastitis 1–10% (Joshi and...

Introduction Preventing the spread of PRRS virus (PRRSv) between groups of pigs is a major goal of pork producers. Many hog operations utilize liquid disinfectant boot baths as a part of biosecurity protocols aimed at minimizing the spread of PRRSv. Several problems arise from the current use of liquid disinfectant boot baths including their effectiveness following contamination with fecal matter and in freezing...
