Broiler Farming Needs Revolutionary Changes in Brooding Procedures

Present day, broiler farming has become as much expensive as it has never been though. In countries like Pakistan majority of the broiler farmers are no more capable of continuing their broiler farming, due to increasing costs of farm operations, like feed, medicine, sudden rise in chicks rate, electricity, litter, brooding, etc. The purpose of this article is to invite the poultry scientists to understand the possibilities of such an idea to practice in the field.
Present day, the traditional broiler farming has been shifted in to integration which requires a huge investment; here we want to work for the survival of the small capacity farmers whose sheds are commonly known as "Bengali" sheds. This shed may be an ideal shed for the harsh summer in hot areas of Pakistan, but cold winter badly affects these types of sheds, leading to closure of broiler farms in some very potential broiler production areas of Pakistan, otherwise heavy mortality and high brooding investment.
Today, the challenging nature of broiler production demands changes to minimize the cost of production starting form best feed conversion and maximum livability to minimum medication and minimum brooding cost. As a matter of fact we are capable of doing very little in this regard. However, I believe that a little done is half done, minimizing at least the cost of brooding will help to reduce the cost of production from Rs:5 to Rs:10 (PKR) per bird.
The common practices of brooding are either through electricity or burning coal or wood. Due to the high cost and less availability of electricity it is now impossible to use electricity as brooding source. On the other hand the demand for coal and wood as heat source has increased which led to indiscriminate destruction of forest which is already facing extinction. However, latter is the most common practice having immense of disadvantages like: availability and high cost during the months of November to February. Fire drums are placed inside the shed for burning wood which produce smoke and oxygen deprivation causing respiratory problem in the flock. A fire drum burning 80 kg of fire wood at a time produces more than 100 Celsius temperature in the radius of 6 ft; leading to dehydration and stressed chicks consequently causing heavy mortality and uneven flock.
Now keeping the fact in mind that the 6 cm chicks require temperature at the level of their height, it makes easy to think about providing heat from under the shed.
Structure of shed:
This type of shed is similar to the common "Bengali" shed, except for the floor which in traditional Bengali shed is not cemented. The floor of the non-traditional shed will be concreted, this is the floor of the shed now fix large metal plates like steel plates over this leaving 60 cm space in between the cemented floor and the metal plates. Now make two fire ditches outside the shed in opposite directions on both ends of the shed connected to the underground of the shed by two each 60 cm concrete pipes. Two fire ditches are sufficient for a 5,000 capacity shed.
Advantages:
* Burn anything like green wood, rubber, garbage, etc, without the danger of smoke and oxygen deprivation in the shed.
* Unlike traditional methods, smoke-free shed minimizes the risk of respiratory problems.
*The two opposite direction fire ditches on both ends of the shed will provide an even temperature to every part of the shed without leaving any pocket.
*In this shed the litter will remain dry for long period thus minimizing the cost of litter.
I am entering in poultry business As I am newcomer i am trying to collect more information about this business , right now i am planning to set up a shed for 5000 birds with contract farming. I have contacted some poultry farmer but they told me that i have to invest minimum 10 to 15 lacs for that capacity. Right now i have some shortage of capital, so please someone can tell me low cost technique for construction of shed.

regards I am a farmer of broiler chickens in the city of Bandung Indonesia. I am very interested in your writing this. may be useful.
dear all, i am really thankful to you for your valuable comments, spacially those who creticised the idea.
infact the purpose of this idea was to invite you people to discuss about the possibility of converting this idea in to a practical shape.on my side i am trying to make it possible as one of my friend said NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.
i am once again thanking all of you with a request to share any possible technique to help me in this regard.

It is a dynamic idea by the author. To fix a metal sheet 60cm space between the
Cemented floor and the metal plate. In this not mention the thickness of the metal
Plate and the heat conductivity of the metal. I think this article is just like a novel
Because chicks have no sense of humor to control yourself and your feet burn
From hot metal plates. Nothing is impossible in future but at that time it is not
Possible.

I appreciate your innovative ideas in the area of chicks brooding!!! If you can supplement this article with best designs of shed then it will be workable & easy to understand the concept. Please if you have such designs paste on this site.Apart from your views in this area i want to add some more techniques of chick brooding,
First thing to keep in mind that Indian Poultry industry is growing with 10-12 [percent]annually. Looking after all modernization era & change in life style we have to adopt such a manage mental techniques where requirement of manpower should be less.As industry has a bright future in the world & peoples are shifting from Red meat to poultry meat, our poultry projects should be Hi tech so that we can compete in all quality parameters in the Globe.
Looking after those changes one time better & hi tech investment is necessary while constructing the poultry sheds & we have to wrap the traditional methods to come in flow.
1. To resolve the problem of electricity at farm level you have to adapt the techniques like Solar energy or wind power so that your project will be not dependent on others for electricity. 2. Construction of shed should be in such a way that you will resolve your all manage mental problems from that viz. Uniformity in brooding temperature , litter condition, feeding systems etc.
Till the time of change definitely your innovative idea of brooding will always be welcome & will definitely helpful to our indian poultry industry

The author of the article has given an idea which is not practically possible to apply in the brooding of poultry chicks. Suppose somebody put this in the shed what about the litter being scattered by the chicks and burning their feet on the hot metal sheets. The author should first read some material about brooding technics and then start given such novel ideas. I have an experience of more than 35 years and was the pioneer in the running of the first intensive broiler farm in the province of punjab a capacity of 6.5 lac. We were using gas cylinders for brooding chicks with results matching or even better than any international broiler farm.

Let me share my experince of broiler /layer chick brooding
The first few weeks temp of brooder house very crucial as under:-
1st weektemp 95 F
2nd weektemp 90 F
3rd weektemp 85 F
4th week temp 80 F
Most of the time during winter in south asian countries it becomes practically difficult to maintain such temp specially during night time and with the result chicks loose body weight by depleting body energy to maintain body temp.
We have tried alterantive to electric brooder i.e
1.gas brooder- if gas is available
2.kerosene - wig stovewith blue flamecovered with 3ftx 3ft ( 9sqFt) AC sheet
3.kerosene wig stove covered with MS 10kg capacity bowl ,fille with sand
4.using soft wood coal heaters
5.using hard coal heater ( take the heater inside the brooder house onlyafter smoke has completly gone)
6.using saw wood dust heaters
Sealing the doors and windows with HDEp sheeting during night
Giving luke warm medicated water to day old chicks by keeping brooder on 12 hrs before arrival of chicks.
ensure that one attendend stays with the the brooder house.
try one as above and you will be happy

Good idea but the photos of the shed has to be given to make it practical I would request to send a photo of the shed with all the specifications of the construction .
Dear Doc,
Idea seems to be good theoretically. But very difficult to practice. Maintenance of RIGHT temperature throughout would be very difficult. Brooding is the most important stage in the chicks life and such ADJUSTMENTS may not help. Nevertheless, you have an innovative mindset, which can be used well for the benefit of poultry farmers.
