Water Acidifier in Broiler Production

Some Observations on use of Water Acidifier and Sanitizer in Broiler Production

Published: April 11, 2011
Summary
The quality of drinking water for poultry and its effect on performance have been of concern to poultry producers for many years. Water makes up a large proportion of the body of the chicken, from 55% to 75%, therefore it is essential for life. Chickens are able to survive much longer without feed than without water. A rule of thumb for water is that the bird consumes from 1.5 to 2 times as much ...

Dear Doctor,

You can test the product from TROUW NUTRiTION, SELKHO PH which is a water acidifier has given excellent results against all other products and is well moving in Tamilnadu.

For acidifier and sanitiser you can tryu HYGISOFT PC which contains PHMG and Acidifier, which is very economical and is 0.14 paisa per bird (Broiler). iot has given excellent results in field for both the products kindly contact

yes a very good article showinf the efficacy of water acidifier and the need of maintaining clean drinking lines for production.but please specify that in farms where biofilm is present will the effect will be the same or not.
second i dont understand how it is going to boost ANTIBODY MEDIATED IMMUNE RESPONSE. but still a good approach.please do not comparecost \efficiency ratios while research.

I know producer who had to replace all of the drinkers in his poultry house twice in less than a year because his acidification program was too aggressive. That cost him about $4,000. Remember, we you talking about acids, and acids corrode metal components, without exception. A producer must determine when considering the use of acids: will the gain in production outweigh the cost of replacing components damaged by the acid? pH scale is a logarithmic measure, This means lowering pH from 7.2 to 6.2 increases the acidity of the water by 10 times. Lowering pH to 5.2 makes it 100 times more acidic, and lowering to 4.2 is 1,000 times more acidic. There are a variety of weak organic acids on the market. They include acetic acid (used to make vinegar), benzoic acid, butyric acid, citric acid, formic acid (used to make formaldehyde), fumaric acid, lactic acid, propionic acid and sorbic acid. We already know that chlorine alone can corrode metal and plastic parts in the drinkers, causing them to leak or discharge too much water. Adding acid to the water simply compounds that corrosive process. Bacteria have the capability of becoming resistant to a particular acid, one acid may be effective on one type of bacteria but not on another. Another downside to using acidifiers is that they can promote the growth of algae and fungi in the watering system. Research has shown that chlorine, even chlorine boosted by an acidifier, is very ineffective at killing bacteria embedded in a biofilm. We , IN-VET Institute, reccomends use special patented formulation, multicomponent, multifunctional, long lasting, effective in wide pH range (4 - 9), fully ecological.

We know the need for proper sanitation of water and maintain a correct pH is a very important factor to poultry producction but today is possible to provide other benefits with an alone product: besides offer an acidification, GUSTOR helps the development of and recovery the intestinal flora vs pathogenic assaults. The combination of organic and inorganic acids with sodium butyrate provides this advantages inmediately and is possible to apply via feed or water with excellent results. NOREL, S.A. has developped this kind of products and can offer more information.

Very good article about use of Water Acidifier and Sanitizer in Broiler Production. Likewise many studies have been conducted to prove the efficacy of organic acids in water sanitation as some of the organic acids show excellent antibacterial activity. I also corraborate to some extent with the view expressed by Miroslav Besermenji of Yogoslavia. Corrosion is one thing we cannot overlook.
I know one product "ADDCON XL" which is a combination of Formic acid and Hexamethylenetetramine.
It has been proven that Formic acid has very good antibacterial activity by the vertue of its smallest chain length and molecuolar mass. Hexamethylenetetramine is a chemical compound that has a property of corrosion inhibitor, when added to a liquid or gas, it decreases the corrosion rate of a material. typically a metal or an alloy. Some of the mechanisms of its effect are formation of a passivation layer, that is a thin film on the surface of the material that stops access of the corrosive substance to the metal, inhibiting either the oxidation or reduction part of the redox corrosion system (anodic and cathodic inhibitors), or scavenging the dissolved oxygen.Hexamethylenetetramine is also used as a urinary antiseptic.(wikipedia /chemicalland)

I would like to supplement following which I have been enlightening time & again in this forum. We all know that Safe Drinking Water is essential for poultry health but contamination of drinking water in poultry is formidable. Depending on the source and supply path, water can get contaminated with various organic & inorganic substances resulting in high pH and growth of pathogens including Salmonella sp E.coli & fungi. Researches date back in 1942 (Farmer et al.,) found that by nature GI tract of poultry chicken is acidic to average approximately pH 4.5 The pH of gizzard is lowest at 2.6 where as the alimentary tract varied between 5.7 to 6.5. Fuerst & Kare (1961) found that chicks would accept water acidified to a pH as low as 2. Acceptance of this acidic water improved as the birds became older. Water acidified with organic acids was readily accepted if the pH was at 3 or 4, depending on the organic acid used. High acidity is inhibitory to many bacteria, especially those that are pathogenic or of public health concern. The optimum growth pH of these pathogenic organisms usually lies within the pH range of 6.0 to 8.0 so to minimize pH very effectively direct acting organic acids are being used widely. Furthermore, Strauss & Hayler in 2001 confirmed that certain bacteria are sensitive to acids of specific chain length, e.g. gram-ve bacteria are sensitive to acids comprising less than 8 carbon atoms. Hellweg et al., in 2006 and Freitag in 2007 stated that Organic acids exert their effect directly on microbial cell of acid sensitive bacteria. Lactobacilli spp. appears to be unaffected as these are acid loving bacteria. Some so called acidifier with formulation containing of Organic & inorganic acids are also available in market that may hamper the performance as stated by other participants above however a true acidifier containing selected organic acids (No inorganic acids) are able to replace the AGP if used continuously through water as well as feed. Several research study have determined that water acidification of poultry is beneficial to feed efficiency, nutrient availability, health & well-being of poultry. Please remember the KEY is Selecting right combination of selected organic acids having right pKa value. ACIDISOLE (Guybro Chemical) has desired formulation to satisfy the poultry farmers.

Or you can use Nutrisure from Noack Company. We use this product by 5 years and we have almost 15 milions broilers/ year. In Romania we don t have a verry good quality water and the clorinations of wateris not on a large scale. So , for us water acidifiing is the only solution. I have tryed a lot of product , all are the same.If you use acetic acid with CuSO4 or you use anything to lower your water ph ...your results will be the same.Pay attention for the fungus and be carrefuly with Cu concentration. Is important to have Cu inside , but cu is toxic for poultry.Ph of the water after addition of the acidifier is good to be betwen 3.75-4

Dear All, I feel your research itself is now a guideline for all poultry producers to think on the Water Quality to be fed to the birds. You have tested much many parameters and results proves that the use of acidifiers in the water will improve the bird's performance index. I wish to know that for acidification which ACID you have used? Also with due respect requesting to to do more study on the combination effect of Acidifier + Sanitizer with different kinds of probiotics in the same water. Thanks for such a wonderful research... regards, Dr Jaydip

It is correct that acidifier alone and Acididfier + Sanitizer treatment of water is helpfull, but it is variable for variable levels of water quality for the parameters like PH of water before treatment, TDs level, hardness levels & microbes count per unit of untreated water with difference to treatment. Moreover results given by the author for this article indicate that there is not much diference in parameters like Average daily weight gain, FCR,liveability, blood chemistry for Hb & PCV values in acidifier treated water in comparison to RO water. Here we have to compare that what is the cost input for organic acids alone or Organic acids + Sanitizer & RO treated water. If RO water is cheaper than acidifier + Sanitizer treatment, then it is better to continue with RO water. It is fact that where there RO is infeasible for smaller units, there acidification of drin king water is also helpful. Following information has not been given, if it is provided it will be more helpful. A: - Please mention the organic acids used & their concentratio. B: - Comparison of acidifier treated water with RO water for the parameters of immunity (antibody titers) has not been given. This comparison will help. C: - Range of TDS, Hardness levels in which it is more effective. As now a days in moderen poultry water is being given through nipples, in my opinion it will help in keeping the lines clean, indirectly helping the bird unintrupted water supply. Dear Mr Manoj, I wish to advise you that your Ph is slightly alkaline so please try to keep it at 6.3 to 6.4 at the bore well point then at the end at drinker level it will be around 6.6 to 6.8 which will give you the better acidic environment in GI tract of birds. Also note that you have to check the Ph of water at starting point (Bore well) and end point on monthly basis without fail. According to the analysis reports you have to standardize your doses for Acidifiers. Thanks & regards, Dr Jaydip
