Forum: Immunosuppression in birds

Published: February 21, 2012
By: Dr. Rahul Hardas

The problem has been detected in broilers of above 30 days of age. P.M reveals symptoms complicated with respiratory infections and bundled up with E.coli. The P.M lesions commonly seen are enlarged liver and pale swollen kidneys and sometimes fluid seen in the pericardial sac. The photo has been uploaded for reference in my profile. The vaccination includes ND killed with F strain in drinking water on the 7th day and IBD + on the 12-14th day.

Could you please throw some light on this topic?

Is what you observe anatomical changes of the bursa Fabricius and spleen.?
f both bodies show no lesion. It should guide your diagnosis to respiratory diseases especially mycoplasmosis

May be because of Toxins or high dense Feeds can you switch over to Gumboro Plain but to be given again a repetation.

This problem id due to toxins present in feed and can be controlled by restricted feeding; means feed the birds after intervals, feed should remain present in the feeders all the times. Dr.Jahan Zeb Ansari Poultry Development Officer Govt. Poultry Farm Bahawalpur

You can go for good Toxinbinder like Toxidex of Veto quinol and can give Sorbitol base liver tonic not Herbal in this case. And as right said by Dr Ansari restricted feeding.

Dear Dr. Rahul,
As per the lesions described you, kindly check the size of the bursa along with if any deposition of urates in the urates. If liver is having blotchy spots or mottled liver along with swollen kidneys, fluid in the pericardial sac then you can tentatively lead it towards IBH. But if there is respiratory sound in the flock then Mycoplasma infection can be detected by PM lesions. Also see whether the trachea is haemorrhagic along with deposition of mucous in the trachea.
Use of Mycotoxin free feed is the first remedy on Immunosuppression in birds.
Use Vitamin E & Selenium combination for better immunity.
Stress free management of birds with proper space, availability of sufficient feeders & drinkers & coli free water helps to minimise the Immunosuppresion & ultimately the disease occurence.

This condition (demonstrated in the photo) is mostly a feed problem rather than an infection . You should check the feed and the flock health performance.

Thanx to all. Just a few hours ago, I had to deal with the same case in the field. I have prescribed potenmic (treats liver dysfunction, deals with immunosupression, acts as hematonic nd anti oxident, toxins, thus with potenmic no anemia, gizzard erosions, fatty infiltration on heart liver and kidneys).+ farmaril (for stress etc). I ´ve also recommended treatment for mycoplasmosis.  In the light of ur discussion, thanx To Allah that i was right, in treating condition like that.

FATTY Liver is clear in the picture also the color of the liver is not good. Immunodiffisciency can be obtained after giving IBD+ vaccines so you have to test the ND titers after five days from the IBD vaccine to bes ure that the vaccine it self affect the immune system This case is not clear as you have to analyse the feed

On top of feed - toxicity version I´d try to exclude oxigen -heat stress - oxydatyve stress - peroxydes scenario
Any more signs indicating to adeno?
