The swine industries of the world are very dynamic and continue to evolve and change along with the external forces that shape agriculture world-wide. The factors influencing change are generally related to economic efficiency and competition from alternative protein sources. The global trend is for fewer producers, responsible for larger numbers of pigs, and more concentration within the swine industry. The ability to maintain economic viability is a function of providing optimal facilities, genetics, nutrition, and health programs to the pig in a system that addresses cost of production and generating revenue from the marketing of a high-quality product.
Swine production in the 21st century has become quite sophisticated. Many pork producers have transitioned away from raising purebred pigs for food and instead are raising crossbred pigs carefully selected for a specific need. These systems involve purposeful selection of the grandparent animals that usually selected with a maternal or terminal emphasis in composite breeding programs that emphasize the benefits of breed complimenting. The resulting offspring are called parent stock which are then bred to produce crossbred terminal animals.

To ensure that accommodations are proper, and health safety protocols are in place, the IPVS2022 Organizing Committee, the world´s leading technical and scientific event in the pig industry, travelled to Rio de Janeiro on an official visit to thoroughly assess the facilities that will host the Congress.
The IPVS first hybrid event is scheduled to place from June 21st to 24th, 2022 at Riocentro Convention Center and is expected to attract approximately 1,500 attendees from all...
In 2022, hog production will decline by 5 percent due to low inventories and a smaller sow herd, which resulted from significant slaughter and delayed restocking in 2021. In 2022, government policies will disincentivize small- and medium-scale operations...
Global drivers impacting food production and consumption The agricultural sector is faced with the daunting challenge of producing food for a growing global population, which is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100 (UN WPP 2019), with sub-Saharan African countries accounting for more than half of the growth of the world’s population between 2019 and 2050 (Figure 1; UN WPP 2019). FAO alerted countries to take preventive measures in light of the recent detection of the first case of African swine fever in the Americas, discovered in domestic pigs in the Dominican Republic, on July 28, 2021.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations stated that African swine fever does not represent any risk to human health, neither through direct contact with infected animals, nor through the consumption of any animal product.
The disease is now found...
Introduction This article identifies the most significant research innovations that, in our opinion, have been applied by the North American pork industry in the past decade. They are primarily the result of leading edge research in North America. Research discoveries were not considered unless they were being integrated into practice, with the exception of gene editing for pathogen control, which is in the approval process. Innovations that we identified as...

Introduction During the last decades, the use of data by farmers has been limited. Most of the systems used were simple and mainly focused on the management of farm tasks, with limited or no capacity of analysis. Integration of data from different devices or farms was also difficult, and there was little applied knowledge on the value of data in the strategic decision-making. Another weak point, not solved so far, is the lack of support services in use of...
Introduction
The founding objectives of the IPVS were to provide a forum for exchanging ideas and information concerning pig health and disease, to encourage the formation of pig veterinary societies in all countries and to foster cooperation among them. In 1969, Dr. Tom Alexander chaired the Organizing Committee of the inaugural IPVS congress in Cambridge, UK. Tom embodied and shaped the soul of the IPVS by melding an eminent scientific...
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global concern, for both animal health and public health. Estimations of the burden of AMR predict that 10 million people will die annually in 2050 when no action is taken now. Many resistant bacteria (or resistance genes) can cross species barriers, and therefore exchange of resistant bacteria and resistance genes between humans, animals and the environment occurs frequently. Most obvious is the transfer of AMR from animals to humans...

1. Introduction The global demand and industrial production of pork and pork products are increasing. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) statistics, worldwide swine production has increased steadily from 1961 to 2007, with Asia the continent with the highest production with around 50% of the total worldwide production. Between 2007 and 2017, production increased significantly in Asia and remained as the highest swine producers (almost...
