Swine industry

The swine industries of the world are very dynamic and continue to evolve and change along with the external forces that shape agriculture world-wide. The factors influencing change are generally related to economic efficiency and competition from alternative protein sources. The global trend is for fewer producers, responsible for larger numbers of pigs, and more concentration within the swine industry. The ability to maintain economic viability is a function of providing optimal facilities, genetics, nutrition, and health programs to the pig in a system that addresses cost of production and generating revenue from the marketing of a high-quality product. Swine production in the 21st century has become quite sophisticated. Many pork producers have transitioned away from raising purebred pigs for food and instead are raising crossbred pigs carefully selected for a specific need. These systems involve purposeful selection of the grandparent animals that usually selected with a maternal or terminal emphasis in composite breeding programs that emphasize the benefits of breed complimenting. The resulting offspring are called parent stock which are then bred to produce crossbred terminal animals.
Changing global consumer trends are increasing the pressure on pig and poultry producers to harness the potential of the latest developments in livestock nutrition in order to remain competitive, according to Danisco Animal Nutrition, one of the world’s leading feed ingredient specialists. “The quest for healthier lifestyles is bringing about major changes in terms of what consumers look for when buying meat. The global trend towards leaner meat is reflected in what retailers are demanding...

A central Iowa company hopes their product can make pork even tastier tomorrow than it is today. Biotronics, Inc. recently introduced the BioSoft© Toolbox for Swine, an ultrasound image capturing and interpretation system. Developers say the software program is the first of its kind to accurately predict the percentage of intramuscular fat, or marbling, in live pigs. In the past 15-20 years, hog farmers have done a great job of breeding pigs that are lean and muscular. One of the tools...

The possible sources of infection include unpasteurised milk, undercooked meat products, while the major source is poultry and poultry products. Current detection methods are time-consuming and laborious, hampered by the fact that the...
