The swine industries of the world are very dynamic and continue to evolve and change along with the external forces that shape agriculture world-wide. The factors influencing change are generally related to economic efficiency and competition from alternative protein sources. The global trend is for fewer producers, responsible for larger numbers of pigs, and more concentration within the swine industry. The ability to maintain economic viability is a function of providing optimal facilities, genetics, nutrition, and health programs to the pig in a system that addresses cost of production and generating revenue from the marketing of a high-quality product.
Swine production in the 21st century has become quite sophisticated. Many pork producers have transitioned away from raising purebred pigs for food and instead are raising crossbred pigs carefully selected for a specific need. These systems involve purposeful selection of the grandparent animals that usually selected with a maternal or terminal emphasis in composite breeding programs that emphasize the benefits of breed complimenting. The resulting offspring are called parent stock which are then bred to produce crossbred terminal animals.
A microscopic worm may be the key to heart-friendly bacon. Geneticists have mixed DNA from the roundworm C. elegans and pigs to produce swine with significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids the kind believed to stave off heart disease.
Researchers hope they can improve the technique in pork and do the same in chickens and cows. In the process, they also want to better understand human disease.
"We all can use more omega-3 in our diet," said Dr. Jing Kang, the Harvard Medical School...
Introduction The role of the Australian pig industry in the global market place has changed significantly in the past five years from virtually no pork exports in 1996 to an export industry worth in excess of $AUD240 million in 2001. As a consequence, the Australian pig industry focus to maintain global competitiveness and long term viability has also changed. The industry has moved from monitoring the cost of production of major exporting nations in an attempt to remain...
Producers make daily management decisions for the best practice of their property and the welfare of their pigs. However, these decisions are now being viewed under tighter scrutiny due to the introduction of PigPass. For some producers there are several grey areas which surround the Withholding Periods (WHP’s) and Export Slaughter Intervals (ESI’s).
PigPass is concerned with the animal husbandry of pigs and includes some information and questions around the WHP’s and ESI’s for commonly used...
Introduction Pork is possibly the most versatile raw meat product compared to chicken, beef, turkey and lamb. By utilising sophisticated processing techniques it can be easily transformed and presented across a highly varied range of quality products such as fresh pork, spare ribs, specialist hams, bacon, sausages and salamis. Developing and marketing new pork products is becoming an increasingly competitive activity due to the globalisation of the pig industry and the...
Only one pig farm was found using the banned growth enhancement drug Beta-Agonist by the Department of Veterinary Services and Animal Industry (Dovsai) in Sabah since last year.
Dovsai Director Datuk Haji Awang Sahak Salleh said the operator of this small farm in Sandakan had stopped using the drug after a reminder by the department.
This was proven in follow-up action, including blood and urine samples of the breeding pigs, taken by the department to ensure the farm was in the clear....
Introduction Historically, the identification of selenium (Se) as a toxic element was indirectly referred to in at least two major writings. In both cases the detrimental effects of the element were unknown at the time of the recordings. The first written account, quoted by Moxon (1937), was from Marco Polo who traveled the Orient during the 13th century where he reported: “.....It is a fact that when they take that road, they cannot venture amongst the mountains...

The US based National Pork Producers Council is expressing its concern over a Health Canada proposal to further restrict the use of Carbadox in Canada.
Carbadox is an antibiotic used to protect against swine dysentery in the nursery phase. It was authorized for use in Canada in the early 1970’s but in 2001 Health Canada issued a stop sale order on the product and in 2004 its drug identification numbers were withdrawn.
Now Health Canada is proposing to further restrict its use to ensure...
Canadian pork producers are encouraging Health Canada to consider potential trade implications as it addresses the foreign use of Carbadox.
Carbadox, an antibiotic used mainly to protect against swine dysentery, was withdrawn from use in Canada in 2001 because of potential human health concerns and now Health Canada is preparing regulations that would establish maximum residue levels in imported pork products.
Canadian Pork Council executive director Martin Rice explains...
Research conducted at the Prairie Swine Centre has shown pigs fed different classes of wheat of equal quality will perform equally well.
Often wheat grown to target a specific end use will fall short of the grade specifications for that market and end up as animal feed.
However questions have been raised about the suitability of certain types of wheat for feed.
In an effort to determine whether class will affect swine growth, scientists at the Prairie wine Centre compared the...
The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has launched a database that lists newly analyzed nutrient data for nine cuts of raw and cooked fresh pork.
The new data show significant changes in nutrient content of some of the pork cuts over time. Eight of the nine raw cuts were found to be leaner than those previously analyzed, while protein content remained unchanged.
The resource provides public and private researchers, health professionals and policy makers with key information for...
