Scientists are tracking a new species of pestivirus that could pose a threat to U.S. cattle. Tentatively called “HoBi-like viruses,” they are related to bovine viral diarrhea viruses (BVDV), which cause significant economic losses to cattle producers worldwide. Originally found in South America, HoBi-like viruses have since been associ Scientists are tracking a new  ...

Productivity and longevity of dairy cows are greatly influenced by proper nutrition programs. Human-animal interaction in larger dairies is limited, and ailments detection relies heavily on employees. Metabolic disorders and their complications such as hypocalcaemia, fatty liver, ketosis, displaced abomasum, acidosis, and laminitis may result from dietary inadequacies. Early veterinary attention increases treatment effectiveness and reduces overall costs....

A previous iGrow article, The Many Shades of Lameness looked at detection of lameness in feedlot and pasture cattle. What are the processes that contribute to these cases of lameness? One way to classify the various cause of lameness in cattle is to group them into two different categories: bacterial infection and injury. Some lameness...

Typically spring brings an increase in moisture, resulting in muddy lots or simply moister environments due to rain or snow melt. Within the dairy operation this intensifies the need to focus on foot care and lameness. Lameness continues to be one of the major reasons for culling and lost milk production in dairy herds. One of the best ways to minimize lameness occurring in your herd is to be proactive by having a management plan in place. ...

It was first identified by metagenomic analysis in Germany (1) and in the Netherlands in autumn 2011 (2) and spread rapidly over large parts of Central and Western Europe (1-5), affecting primarily ruminants, but also new-world camelids such as alpacas (1,6). The disease recurred in 2012 (7).There is...

Nowadays in Pakistan Dairy is progressing and greater milk yield is being obtained from dairy animals. However, this high milk yield adds great stress to dairy animals especially in pre-parturient and post-parturient period, as a result more and more cases of Downer cows are being reported. These cases are due to: 1. Blood Parasites 2. Fasciolosis 3. Improper feeding management 4. Low Body condition score 5. Fatty liver syndrome and Ketosis. Please discuss the...

INTRODUCTION Eimeriosis in cattle is an important enteric protozoan parasitosis causing economic losses and severe clinical disease in calves (daugschies et al., 1998). Unlike most other eimerian species in cattle or in rodent models, the life cycle of E. bovis includes the development of macromeronts (up to 250 µm) within an endothelial host cell (Hammond et al., 1964). This rather long lasting process...

Hello everybody, There is a dairy farm in Turkey. The avarage milk yield of the cows is about 32 lt/day. For 10-15 days, it has seen cecal dilatation and right displaced abomasum very often. As I know either cecal dilatation or displaced abomasum is related wtih particul size of TMR and low forage: concantre ratio in TMR. But the interesting thing is, none of them is wrong. I mean there is 45% of forage on the TMR and the particle size is like to be. And the...

Respiratory disease is the second leading cause of death losses (scours is the first) in un-weaned heifer calves. Respiratory problems have increased by 34 percent in the last 20 years, causing nearly 21 percent of all newborn calf losses (NAHMS 2007). Heifers that survive continue to perform poorly as adult cows. In order to prevent this costly problem, it is important to address both determinant and predisposing causes.  PREDISPOSING CAUSES...
