INTRODUCTION Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) is a disease of cattle and buffalos (Abdulkadir, 1989) caused by 1 of 2 serotypes of Pasteurella multocida, designated B:2 and E:2 (FAO, 2015; IIL, 2015). The disease in cattle is prevalent in the tropics, particularly in the equatorial region of South East Asia and Africa, where outbreaks mostly occur during the rainy season (Dhanda, 1966; Anosa and Esoun, 1975). In Nigeria, HS in cattle was first reported in Sokoto, Bauchi,...

Objective: The objective was to compare Ca serum concentration and frequency of severe [Ca < 2.0 mmol/L] and moderate [Ca < 2.125 mmol/L] subclinical hypocalcemia (SCH) in cows supplemented according to the Dietary Cation Anion Differences (DCAD) principles or with synthetic zeolite. Materials and methods: The trials were performed in two large commercial farms in US and blood samples were taken within the first 24 hours after...
X-Zelit was tested at the Cornell University. In a ProDairy webinar, Tom Overton is discussing the methods to prevent hypocalcemia and some of the results from the X-Zelit trial is presented. Watch the entire webinar here....
Background Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is a slow-growing bacterium that causes Johne’s disease, a wasting disease in ruminants and other animals. A common test for Johne’s disease is the serum antibody ELISA test which monitors the humoral immune response of the animal following MAP exposure. However there are well known limitations of this test, for example the sensitivity can be...
Introduction • Most cows are unable to elude some level of hypocalcemia in the immediate postpartum period, with 40 to 70% of multiparous cows developing subclinical hypocalcemia (SCH; Reinhardt et al., 2011; Caixeta et al., 2015; Neves et al., 2017). • Supplementing anions in prepartum rations is a common strategy to improve blood Ca concentrations however, SCH is often not eliminated (Leno et...
INTRODUCTION Digital dermatitis (DD) is a widespread infectious foot lesion in cattle that typically causes painful ulcerative lesions (Cheli and Mortellaro, 1974; Read and Walker, 1998). Digital dermatitis has become endemic in intensively managed dairy systems (Blowey, 2005), affecting 70 to 95% of North American dairy farms (Cramer et al., 2008; USDA, 2009; Solano et al., 2016). The prevalence of DD is higher in cows managed in confinement housing than in pasture-based...
INTRODUCTION Digital dermatitis (DD) is a widespread bacterial foot lesion in cattle that typically develops on the bulb of the heel, causing ulcerative lesions that may be uncomfortable or very painful (Cheli and Mortellaro, 1974; Döpfer et al., 1997). It is the most common foot lesion in confined dairy systems, with a prevalence ranging from 15 to 49% (Holzhauer et al., 2006; USDA, 2009; Solano et al., 2016) and...
Cornell University tested the efficiency of a calcium binder (X-Zelit®) for preventing hypocalcemia. Feeding low level calcium in the prepartum diet has shown to be effective in improving the calcium level at calving. However, as this is difficult to obtain using the commonly used feeds, binding the dietary calcium using X-Zelit can mimic the low calcium approach. Preliminary results from the trial were presented at the annual Cornell Nutrition Conference...
Vaccines are suspensions of microorganisms administered with the goal of stimulating the body's immune system against these same organisms, thereby preventing a clinical disease or reducing its severity. The agents included in vaccines are inactivated or modified such that, once introduced into the body, they do not cause clinical illness.

“Uterine Care Awareness Day” or “Garb Suraksha Diwas” is an initiative from Involon DS (leading uterine tonic) towards CALF A YEAR program. Through this Initiative, Natural Remedies aims to throw light on the post calving disorders on the dairy animals and its economic impact on dairy farmers. Involon DS has unique properties and ensures early onset of post-partum & better conception rate....
INTRODUCTION Lameness is a severe welfare problem in cattle and has a detrimental effect on longevity (Cramer et al., 2009a), productivity (Green et al., 2002), and reproductive performance (Barkema et al., 1994; Garbarino et al., 2004). Consequently, it is among disorders causing the largest economic losses in the dairy industry (Ettema and Ostergaard, 2006). Approximately 90% of the causes of lameness involve foot...

Introduction Mastitis remains the most common disease of dairy cows and treatment or prevention of this disease is the most common reason that antibiotics are administered to cows (Pol and Ruegg, 2007, Saini et al., 2012). Mastitis is detected by inflammation that is caused by infection by microorganisms and occurs in both clinical and subclinical forms. Milk obtained from quarters of cows with subclinical mastitis looks...
