Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis in broiler chickens
Published:January 2, 2025
Adnan Alrubaye (University of Arkansas) explains this disease, also known as BCO Lameness. He comments on different mitigation methods and his research collaboration with companies, in this Engormix interview.
Thanks for highlighting a very important problem of broiler chicken. Generally it is considered that Staphylococci and aflatoxins are responsible for BCO, and Your's good self has mentioned to use Probiotics and Vaccines to prevent BCO. So which probiotics and vaccines are necessary to prevent BCO?

Only in 2025, more than 40 studies relating to the broiler gut-bone axis have been published in Google Scholar. The gut-bone axis is an emerging concept that describes how the gut, particularly its microbiome, influences bone health through complex interactions involving immunological, metabolic, and endocrine pathways. The gut microbiota produces metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which regulate the activity of bone cells, promote calcium absorption, and modulate inflammation, collectively favoring bone formation and reducing bone loss. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota can trigger inflammatory responses that lead to increased bone resorption and the onset of conditions such as osteoporosis. Therapeutic approaches targeting the gut-bone axis include multi-strain probiotics, which have shown potential in improving bone mineral density, preventing bone diseases, and reducing fractures. This axis is considered a promising target for multidisciplinary treatments aimed at promoting bone health and managing osteoporotic conditions.
