Litter moisture more than 50% results in to more ammonia formation into the farm & attracts flies as their breeding sites. By considering hazards of ammonia and to avoid various infectious diseases in the farm poultry litter moisture must be reduced. Litter moisture in the poultry houses can be reduced by proper attention & good managemental practices. Important factors like diet, bird health, ventilation, stocking density, litter material and depth and at the same time temperature, moisture and pH play an important role in the generation of ammonia.
Ammonia gas is an alkaline gas & lighter than the air, so addition of limestone which is alkaline in nature could aggravate the problem of ammonia and related problems. Alkaline litter contains load of organisms as bacterial growth is usually occurs in the alkaline medium. From unhygienic bedding diseases may spread into the farm. Yucca feeding reduces ammonia in the litter to a limited extent. feeding of acidifier which is effective from crop to cloaca will help to control moisture in the litter, it acidifies fecal droppings and helps to keep litter acidified.
While thinking to reduce the moisture problem in the litter, need to think also about the pH of the litter which should be reduced up to 4.0 to 5.5 by using litter acidifier inorder to reduce ammonia & bacterial multiplication.

The use of lime in poultry production can have several effects.
•Lime application to litter increases the pH of the litter. When litter reaches pH 12, cell membranes of pathogens living in the litter are destroyed.
•Lime reduces the nitrogen content of litter by increasing ammonia volatization. For this reason, it is important to refrain from using lime when the ammonia level in a poultry house is high. Organic producers should keep in mind that hydrated lime is not permitted for deodorizing animal wastes in organic production. For additional information on controlling ammonia in poultry houses, refer to the page on the effectiveness of litter treatments for reduction of ammonia volatization in broiler production.
•Lime decreases soluble phosphorus, thereby reducing phosphorus levels in runoff.
The routine of cleaning and disinfecting equipment and the poultry house between production cycles is key to controlling disease. In addition to the cleaning and disinfecting process, producers can use lime in poultry houses to control pathogens (and reduce fly problems). According to current research, lime is effective at controlling the following poultry diseases:
•Avian influenza
•Newcastle disease
•Ornithosis

Why dont you start the fight against moisture before it starts? Feeding regimes are helping to have lover moisture in Litter.

3. proper ventilation
Poultry house moisture is burning issue specially with commercial broiler farming
Try out as under:
1.Improve ventilation--- raise the side curtains during the day between 10 am to 5pm
2.Provide window of on side walls at every 10ft
3.Run Hanger fans(to be hanged 4ft above ground level inside the house.
4.Tilt (Rake) bedding material every day after 10th day by using MS Raker and,sprinkile lime stone powder.
5.Avoid spillage of water from waterers
6.Check for loose dropping--if there--check for salt and fiber of the feed,check for cocci--isolate effected birds,give curative dose of coccidiostat along with Vitamin A( stop giving B- complex)
The above are practical solutions which we have tried and have worked well
