Drinker Management

Published: September 3, 2024
Summary
Drinking behavior in poultry develops within the first couple days of life. When an open water source is provided, birds stick their beak roughly 10 mm into the water, use a scooping motion to collect water in their beak, extend their neck in a vertical position, and use gravity to transport water down their esophagus to their crop. While this sequence is the natural drinking behavior for b...

This is a very much need of an hr topic, especially for the hot and humid regions. We have seen many problems, from weakness to death due to poor drinker management in poultry farms. Thanks to the authors for publishing this topic and explaining it in such a simple way.

I would like to congratulate the authors on highlighting and explaining a very important topic in a very simple way.
Specially the equation for water pressure on weekly basis, in a nipple type drinking system.
My question is
What should be the maximum amount of water coming from drinking line in a minute in a nipple drinking system when we have maximum water pressure?

The condition of the droppings depend on the water they excrete. When they drink more water more water is purged. The birds on feed restriction play with water nipples. Some believe that we should give nipples with higher flow. With our experience we found that nipples with extra flow ( say broiler breeder nipples used in layers) will only harm the management. The birds will never feel shortage of water when available. They will make an effort to find, spend more time in drinking. They will fulfill their need. In hot climates, the pipe lines get hot. We should flush the system to keep them cool. Any way we run the cooling system like foggers and fans. The water may not get hot. I don't know the water flow per minute. The nipple makers can give the quantity of output in ml/ minute for Broiler breeders, layers and broiler type nipples. We can choose from them.
