When chickens are healthy they consume less feed and produce more quality eggs. They are less trouble to look after and less money is spent on medical costs. Poultry disease can spread rapidly among chickens because they are usually kept together in the chicken house. The chickens share the same feeders and drinkers, which can spread disease and infections rapidly from sick to healthy chickens. In intensive egg production systems, much focus is placed on the egg laying performance of the flock. Poultry diseases can negatively affect the health and performance of your flock. Important and common poultry diseases include necrotic enteritis, chronic respiratory diseases, gangrenous dermatitis, fowl cholera, and avian influenza.
Summary Antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) have been used sub-therapeutically in poultry and other livestock species for maintaining health and improving performance for more than 60 years. After the ban imposed in European Union on use of AGP in animal feeds and growing demand for antibiotic free animal products in other parts of the world, there is need to find alternative substances that can ensure animal health and...
A well established intestinal microflora is crucial for the health of our animals, especially if we expect high production performance. A healthy normal microflora is the first line of defense to invading pathogens and...

1) Which is the most debated issue nowadays in Poultry Nutrition? Which is your opinion about it?
I think the most debated issue nowadays in poultry is the use of antimicrobial drugs as feed additive. We all understand what the demerits are of using these antimicrobial feed additives but still we are not in a position to give up their usage voluntarily.
I believe that...

Abstract Major phases of postnatal feather cycle of Hungarian Upgraded Goose goslings until 11 weeks of age are presented with corresponding photos. Introduction The feathers are the peculiar outer covering of birds. Formation of all follicles and the initial feathers occur during embryo development, and then feathers are continuously shed and regenerated throughout the life of domestic fowl. Here, major phases of the postnatal feather cycle observed...
ANTIVIRAL PROPERTIES
Very few know of the antiviral properties of Orego-Stim®. Orego-Stim® acts against enteric viruses the same way it acts against coccidiosis and ileitis. As the enteric virus needs a host cell (in this case, it is the enterocyte) to undergo the process of replication, therefore Orego-Stim® can control viral enteric diseases such as those caused by rotavirus and coronavirus.
Porcine Rotavirus

New federal regulations require most egg producers to take steps to prevent the spread of Salmonella enteritidis, reports the American Veterinary Medical Association. The FDA rules affect the purchase of chicks and young hens, sanitation in production facilities, testing for the bacteria, and storage of eggs at farms with at least 3,000 laying hens. An FDA announcement states the rules are expected to reduce the number of S enteritidis infections by 60%, preventing about 79,000 cases of...

The discovery of swine flu in birds in Chile raises concerns about the spread of the virus, the UN warns.
Last week the H1N1 virus was found in turkeys on farms in Chile. The UN now says poultry farms elsewhere in the world could also become infected.
Scientists are worried that the virus could theoretically mix with more dangerous strains. It has previously spread from humans to pigs.
However, swine flu remains no more severe than seasonal flu.

Animal welfare is a complex concept but there is general agreement within the scientific community and beyond that farm animals should be able to move easily and be in good health.
One welfare issue of particular interest in the poultry sector is lameness in broiler chickens. According to a group of French researchers, producers often underestimate the amount of lameness in their broiler flocks and in doing so they risk reducing the birds' welfare as well as product...
Reducing water hardness may increase its ability to remove bacteria from broiler chicken skin, according to Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists in Athens, Ga. Water hardness varies in different geographical locations, but most water tested in the United States has some degree of hardness.
"Hard" water has higher concentrations of dissolved minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. Water is softened by removing these minerals, either mechanically or...

As the European Union moves closer toward implementing its ban on the remaining feed grade antibiotics growth promoters in January 2006, the Asian poultry markets are on their toes and closely observing the situation in the EU, realizing that this change is inevitable. As a result, the scene in Asia has been set not to simply sit back and await this expected transformation, but rather, to participate by embracing this change in the best way possible, that is to...
Providing a clean, safe and sanitized water supply is crucial in assuring flocks perform their best. However, before implementing a daily water sanitation program, it is important to thoroughly clean as much of the water distribution system as possible. Line cleaning is necessary before providing birds with sanitized drinking water because even low levels of sanitizer placed in dirty water lines can result in the biofilm sloughing off, which clogs drinkers so that water is restricted to the...
