Forum: Formulating Feed for Broiler Performance

Every year the marketing age of broilers decreases by an average of 0.75 days for the same performance. This trend is likely to continue in the same direction for the coming years. Nutrition plays a vital role in enabling this improvement. As the feed cost represents an expensive input (~70-80% of broiler production cost), the poultry producer should be aware of the dynamics of the feed in its inf...

Producing a 3.5 kg broiler is somehow practically impossible. However, it can be done if the feed at grower lever is in excess of fats thus soluble which is bad for chicken due to hearty complication. It is better to produce meat which is health rather than rushing to produce low quality product.

I am poultry farmer interested in feed formulations
Can someone please tell me what is it in feed formulae that make poultry broilers achieve a weight of 2.5 to 3.0 KG in 6 weeks. Is it several factors and if so which one is the major factor.

In Dar es Salaam the choice of raw materials for formulating broiler feed is rather limited and consist of maize, maize bran, fish meal, sunflower cake, cotton seed cake, blood meal, lime, dcp, bone meal, salt, lysine, methionine and broiler premix. How best can these ingredients be used to formulate a broiler feed that is going to give a live weight of one kilogram in five weeks?

Dear Dr. K. R. Gunasekar,

do not wont to discuss about

"Increase in the fibre content of the feed is useful in slowing down the intestinal motility (which is normally higher in the summer). Including at least 2- 3% SFDOC to increase the fibre in all types of feed will deliver better results. (This will contribute at least 0.3 to 0.4% increases in the fibre of the diet)"

but would like to metion that is not enough just to take care about the fiber just as a crud fiber. There is a huge diference between insoluble and soluble fiber:

Here are some extracts from Hubbard's Nutrition Guide:

Fiber is a nutritionally, chemically and physically heterogeneous material. This heterogeneous mix can be
categorized into two major subclasses i.e., soluble, viscous and fermentable fiber and insoluble, no viscous
and no fermentable fiber. Differentiation of water-soluble and insoluble fiber components has helped
elucidate the physiological effects of fiber (Newman et al., 1992) as the two subclasses have different
roles in the digestive/absorptive processes within the gastrointestinal tract.

Here some example soluble versus insoluble fibre:

SOLUBLE FIBRE
• Lowering intestinal passage rate
• Reduces digestion of fat, protein and starch.
• Energy source for monogastric animals
• Affects viscosity of the digesta
• Mainly fermentable parts
• Reduces dry matter of faeces
• Binds nutrients (pectin)

INSOLUBLE FIBRE
• Structuring fibre
• Accumulate in the gizzard. Regulate digest passage
• Improves starch digestibility
• Increased intestinal passage rate.
• Poorly fermentable
• Stimulation of intestinal villi
• No energy source for young monogastrics
• Increases dry matter content of Faeces

The insoluble fraction used to be considered as performing an exclusively dilutionary role. However, in
addition to their effect on energy consumption and consumption time, it was shown by Hetland et al
(2003) that the insoluble fibre increased retention times in the gizzard and improved the digestibility of
the starch by increasing the gastro-intestinal reflux of bile salts. It is also apparent that an increased
content of insoluble fibre may reduce stereotypic behaviors such as tail pecking.

END OF extracts from Hubbard's Nutrition Guide.

There are many fiber sources but most of them are:
- at the same time also a mycotoxin sources
- soluble fiber sources
- low concentrated
- produce a higher water intake which after results in wett litter (pododermatitis Problems, higher amonia, more flys problems etc.)
- etc

I would like to recomend you to use a concentrated insoluble fiber sorces as Lignocelulose (ARBOCEL):
- high concentrated (les product needed to reach the animal recuriment, high concentrated Feeds are easier to formulate = important in high temperature climates, etc.)
- no mycotoxin risk
- better Protein digestibility (it is known that insoluble increase feed retention time in the gizzard, the pH is than lower, etc.)
- the water intake is not afected (by ARBOCEL absorbed water is in last intestine part reabsorbed and the feaces is DRYER)
- better litter Quality
- reduce feather picking (canibalism)
- etc.
