Vaccine protection of chickens against antigenically diverse H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza isolates with a live HVT vector vaccine expressing the influenza hemagglutinin gene derived from a clade 2.2 avian influenza virus
Published:February 17, 2017
Summary
1. Introduction Since 1990's, there has been a significant increase in the number of highly pathogenic (HP) avian influenza (AI) outbreaks and also in the number of birds involved in those outbreaks [1,2]. The most notable of these recent HPAI outbreaks is a series of H5N1 outbreaks started in China and Hong Kong since 1996, which then spread to other parts of the world including South-East As...
Eliminationg the last virus particle by stamping out policy has proved to a futile excercise with the recent huge outbreaks in usa and eu.
Studies described in this excellent article amply prove that proper vaccination can control the disease and reduce the spread.
Allowing virus handling and trials on various types of vaccines will find better solutions and less losses. Suppressing the use of vaccines is only encouraging clandestine use of unqualifide vaccines in the form of auto vaccines at many places.
The modern concept of vector vaccines and studies on their efficacies are appreciated. Oie should encourage more work in this direction and find effective vaccination as a viable solution along with stamping out.
The compulsory culling of birds due to highly pathogenic AI is a serious financial blow to farmers who are not being compensated by the government. Vectored vaccines are popular nowadays. This new vaccine against AI will be a great advantage to poultry producers. According to the OIE, the last country to be affected by AI is Vietnam.
Thanks all of you for this good article. I'd like to ask about the study that you mentioned about use of HVT vector vaccine expressing HA to protect against multiple lineages of HPAI; Did you have challenged birds with different types of AI like H9 or H7? And what's the explanation for this protection?
Can CEVA provide some more data on their recombinant vaccine hvt with h5n1 vaccine used in their trial facility or in the field some where else. We can use it to convince our authorities for permission to use. We are considering usage for protecting valuable stocks under breeding, which cannot be wiped out in an outbreak area. Housing them at multiple areas may not be possible. Elite stocks of breeding companies and in experimental stocks need protection beyond biosecurity. There is no absolute biosecurity which will ensure exposure to virus particle entering through air and wild birds.
