Growth promotion in broilers by both oxytetracycline and Macleaya cordata extract is based on their anti-inflammatory properties
Published:February 6, 2017
Summary
Earlier, the beneficial effects of antimicrobial growth promoters (AGP) in production animals were attributed to their antibiotic character (1). This is unlikely for a variety of reasons, predominantly due to the sub-therapeutic concentrations used, the absence of a relationship between antibiotic activity and antibiotic spectrum and the use as AGP, and the fact that they work similarly in differ...
The purpose of the research of Dr Niewold et al is to prove the efficacy of known in vivo and in vitro models to compare the anti-inflammatory effects of non-antibiotics with the known effects of old antibiotic growth promotors. This is done, I believe, with the purpose to get a better selection procedure for non-antibiotic growth- promotors and not to advocate the use of antibiotics for growth promotion.
Research has show that Macleaya cordata can be combined with with compounds like CTC, Avilamycin, BMD or OTC with very good effects. Furthermore I would like to point out that dosage is important. The effect of Macleaya cordata is clearly dose-dependent. Higher dosage have a stronger effect than lower dosages, as Dr. Niewold's research paper shows.
